After a fruitless night of searching, the sky began to lighten. Cold, tired, and desperate for sleep, the three of them finally gave up and drove home.
Back at The Mountain Retreat, Swain and Slater trudged upstairs to their rooms without a word. Zena collapsed onto the living room sofa, a storm of exhaustion and fury raging inside her. She was consumed with regret. She had assumed Carla was obedient enough to go through with the marriage without a fuss, so she hadn't bothered to watch her. If she had known this would happen, she would have locked her in her room.
But it was too late for regrets now. More than anything, she felt a profound sense of failure. Carla had always been her greatest source of pride, a masterpiece she had carefully sculpted. Now, that masterpiece had not only failed to live up to her expectations but had also stabbed her in the back at the worst possible moment. She felt she had done nothing wrong, yet everything was falling apart.
Zena closed her eyes, massaging her temples as she tried to figure out how to tell Garfield the engagement party was off. Just then, her phone rang. It was a senior executive from the company.
After listening to what he had to say, her face turned ashen. She mumbled a few responses and hung up.
It was true what they said: when it rains, it pours. Carla was missing, and now a bigger crisis was brewing at Rutledge Group. It was one disaster after another.
After five minutes of panic, Zena forced herself to pull it together. She went to her room, showered, applied her makeup, and changed into a crisp business suit. Twenty minutes later, she walked into the conference room at Rutledge Group.
Old Mr. Rutledge didn't even look up when she entered. Susan met her gaze for a moment before coolly looking away.
The atmosphere in the room was frosty and somber. Zena noticed one other empty chair, meaning someone else was yet to arrive.
The door creaked open, and Zena looked up to see Seren walk in. The ominous feeling in her gut intensified, churning into a certainty of impending doom.
