Old Mr. Rutledge shot him a look. "What are you doing here instead of at home?" he asked coldly.

"It's Seren's birthday," Swain replied, his voice low. "I thought she might come here, so I came to wait for her. To celebrate with her."

"I don't recall you ever wanting to celebrate her birthday before," the old man scoffed. "Now that she's cut ties with you, you suddenly show up? She's not part of your family anymore. In what capacity are you here to celebrate?"

He helped Old Mr. Rutledge into the car. Before closing the door, he walked over to Swain. "Swain," he said casually, "I'm taking Grandfather to my place now."

Hollis could see the regret in Swain's eyes and decided to give him a small opening, a chance to atone. As a brother himself, he could sympathize with Swain's position. Whether Swain would take the chance, or whether Seren would forgive him, was another matter entirely.

Still, Hollis had his doubts. When someone as loyal and kind-hearted as Seren finally decided to cut ties, it was nearly impossible for them to turn back. That kind of decision was only made after enduring far too much disappointment.
