He could more or less guess what Seren was thinking, so he added, "If you really see us as family, don't worry about being a bother. Family never thinks twice about that. The only people who worry about inconveniencing others are strangers."

As for the Bradley family, Hollis had never been fond of them and didn't bother to keep up appearances. He'd grown up in an old, well-established family and never cared much for social climbing. He dealt with people as he pleased, without worrying about currying favor or forging alliances.

The Brewer family had generations of wealth and status behind them. Their standing spoke for itself; there was no need for flattery or strategic friendships.

"Honestly, you could never be a bother. We'd be thrilled to help," Hollis said with a playful scoff, feigning annoyance.

Nadine, watching the whole exchange, rolled her eyes. "You two have always said you wished Seren were your daughter. Well, now you've got your wish."

Hollis coughed, a bit embarrassed. That had been his line, after all. Seren had always been clever and talented, even as a child—it was impossible not to adore her.

Susan's eyes softened with a warm, unmistakable smile. "Listen to your uncle. The engagement party should be held here, where you grew up. And no matter what happens, if Lennon ever gives you trouble, you'll always have a place to come home to. You'll never have to suffer in silence at your in-laws'."

No one likes outsiders meddling in family affairs, so Susan had always held back out of respect for Zena and Thurman's feelings. But now, with nothing holding her back, she could shower Seren with all the care she wanted.

"Alright," Seren managed, her voice thick with emotion. She wasn't good with words, so instead she nodded, firm and heartfelt.

Later, Susan and Hollis brought up the engagement party with Lennon as well. Lennon nodded, glancing sideways at Seren, his eyes gentle and full of affection.
