Watching You Burn In Regret novel Chapter 97

As soon as the car doors opened, Shirley Hayes hurried over to greet them.

"Mom," Seren called out instinctively, the familiar word already on the tip of her tongue. But suddenly, she remembered—she and Lennon were now officially married.

She paused for a brief moment, then corrected herself.

Shirley smiled warmly and nodded, turning to the man beside her. "This is Lennon's father," she introduced.

Seren straightened up and offered a respectful, "Dad."

Jason gave a brief nod in response, his face unreadable. "It's windy out here," he said, his voice flat. "Let's talk inside."

"Okay," Seren replied, her tone a little stiff. She couldn't help feeling nervous—Jason hadn't been unkind, exactly, but something about him made it clear he wasn't all that thrilled with her.

Sensing her unease, Shirley offered a reassuring smile. "Don't worry. He's like this with everyone. You don't need to be nervous."

Seren nodded, the tension in her chest easing somewhat. Shirley's words helped—maybe Jason's stern demeanor was just a habit, the mark of someone used to being in charge, rather than any real dislike.

Once they stepped inside, Seren and Lennon walked ahead.

Behind them, Shirley nudged Jason with her elbow and muttered quietly, "For years, you complained that Lennon never brought anyone home. Now that he finally has, you're not making any effort at all. If you keep this up, you'll scare your daughter-in-law away before dinner."

Jason looked genuinely puzzled. "I thought I was making an effort."

Truthfully, Jason was satisfied with Seren overall. He'd heard the gossip swirling around her, but he never put much stock in rumors—he preferred to judge for himself. From what he'd seen, Seren was well-mannered, poised, and clearly well-brought-up.

But there was one thing that irked him: Seren had made his son wait far too many years. And not just his son—he'd been waiting just as long himself. Other men his age already had grandkids running around, but he had nothing.
