Noelle pouted slightly, pretending to be annoyed, but turned to Martin anyway. "Mr. Rhodes, please excuse me for a moment."
With that, she followed Finnian out toward the deck, his bodyguards trailing at a discreet distance.
The ocean wind whipped around them as Finnian stopped and turned, glaring at her disapprovingly. "Why was your phone off? Mrs. Wagner couldn't find you and had to call me in a panic."
Noelle blinked innocently, then giggled. "I just wanted to take a break from everything. Mrs. Wagner is just a worrier. But... if you couldn't find me, would you be worried?"
Finnian's handsome face turned dead serious. "Noelle, never joke about your safety. This isn't a game."
Noelle took a sip of water, tilting her head. The wind wildly tossed her long hair, but she ignored it, staring stubbornly into his eyes. "You didn't answer my question. If I disappeared, would you worry about me?"
Finnian looked into her eyes, feeling utterly helpless.
"I'm not answering childish questions. Don't ever pull a stunt like this again. You're terrorizing the people who care about you," Finnian scolded sternly.
Noelle smiled softly, completely appeased, like a spoiled child who had finally gotten her candy. She nodded obediently. "Okay, I know. I won't do it again."
Satisfied with her compliance, Finnian let the issue drop and moved to what was really bothering him. "Since when are you so close to Martin Rhodes?"
Noelle stiffened for a fraction of a second before answering defensively. "We've known each other for a long time. We're just hanging out as friends. Are you going to micromanage that too?"
"He's not a good man. Keep your distance from him," Finnian warned her sharply.
"Oh? Sounds like you know him well." Noelle blinked, looking highly amused.
"I've heard things. He had a fiancée recently. I don't know the exact details of why they broke up, but a guy like him isn't right for you." Finnian's tone was dead serious; he wasn't playing around.
"I had no idea. We're genuinely just friends. But to be honest, he's been aggressively pursuing me for the last six months, sending me endless gifts," Noelle said with wide, innocent eyes. "But if you think he's bad news, I'll keep him strictly in the friend zone. I won't let it go any further."
"Good. Keep your eyes open. Don't let yourself get hurt," Finnian ordered before turning and walking back toward the banquet hall.
Noelle frowned slightly, watching his retreating back.
He dragged her all the way out here just to say that?
She stomped her foot in frustration. He was so incredibly dense. Couldn't he at least act a little jealous?
Still, a deep satisfaction settled over her. That empty, aching hole in her chest finally felt full.
