Brynlee noticed her mother's mood was off. She looked up at Finnian and asked, "Did you make Mom mad again?"
Finnian's gaze flickered. "I might have done something wrong that upset her."
Brynlee poked his cheek with her little finger. "It's definitely because you took too long to get here. That's why she's mad."
Unable to explain the complex truth to his daughter, Finnian simply carried her into his room.
Meanwhile, Celine stepped out of the bathroom, toweling off her damp hair. When she saw Kaia looking utterly deflated and noticed Brynlee was missing, she jumped. "Kaia, where's Brynlee? She was just sleeping here."
Kaia looked up at her friend. "Finnian is right next door. She's with him."
"What? Why is he here?" Celine gasped in surprise.
"Who knows," Kaia replied with a bitter scoff.
Celine narrowed her eyes, assessing the situation. "I bet he found out about you and my cousin. The moment he heard you were coming to Switzerland, his radar went off. He's totally here to sabotage any progress between you two."
"He wouldn't stoop that low," Kaia murmured, though doubt crept in.
As Kaia spoke, a suffocating wave of despair crashed over her. Tears spilled from her eyes, carrying the weight of a profound, unspoken agony.
She buried her face in her hands, her voice breaking into a hoarse whisper. "I don't want my child growing up in the shadow of a scandal. She's a Sanders. If the company crashes, she loses everything she's entitled to. I won't ruin her future."
"So you're just..."
"I'm going to divorce Finnian quietly and take Brynlee with me. Whatever he and Noelle decide to do after that is none of my business." Kaia's decision was forged in the fires of logic and fierce maternal protection.
"I get it now. Fine, you do what you have to do. I won't push you to start a war," Celine said, feeling a pang of guilt for her earlier outburst. She walked over and pulled Kaia into a tight hug. "Then leave quietly, and never look back. Let them dig their own graves."
