What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 378

The line connected a few rings later. "Dr. Chavez, is there an emergency?" Quinn Finch asked, his voice sharp and alert.

Kaia leaned back in her desk chair. "Mr. Finch, I need you to look into something immediately."

"Tell me."

"We had dinner at the Sanders Estate tonight, and Noelle threw up violently. Based on my medical experience..." Kaia paused, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. "I suspect she's pregnant."

A heavy beat of silence passed over the line before Quinn spoke. "Who do you suspect the father is?"

Kaia stared out the window at the bright moon. The harvest festival was approaching, a time meant for family reunions, yet her own family was shattering.

A bone-deep exhaustion settled into her bones. "I need proof," she said quietly. "Regardless of who the father is, I need you to find out the truth."

Hearing her dodge the name, Quinn understood the sheer agony she was holding back.

"Understood. I'll initiate the investigation immediately."

"Mr. Finch..." Kaia hesitated.

"Don't worry," Quinn assured her. "I'll be extremely discreet. Everything will be strictly within legal boundaries. I won't alert them, and I won't leave a trace."

"Thank you," Kaia whispered.

"It's my job."

After hanging up, Kaia sat in the dark for a long time, her body numb.

The grand finale of this twisted drama was finally beginning. The main characters had taken the stage, and soon, it would be time for her, the tragic supporting actress, to make her exit.

If the baby was Finnian's, Kaia knew the divorce papers would be signed very, very soon.

The next morning.

Having barely slept, Kaia looked exhausted. Layla had been up early, making breakfast and getting Brynlee dressed in a cute outfit, complete with her new backpack.

Then, his phone rang.

It was Kaia.

A jolt of realization hit him—today was Brynlee's first day of school. He was supposed to be there. But Noelle was lying in a hospital bed, her life hanging in the balance. He answered, his tone frantic. He hastily apologized to Brynlee, gave a clumsy excuse, and asked to speak to Kaia.

"Kaia," he breathed, desperation leaking into his voice. "I have a massive emergency at work and I can't leave. Please, just explain it to Brynlee and take her to the school. I'll get there as soon as I can, I swear."

Before he could even finish the sentence, Kaia hung up.

Finnian stared at the dead screen, his chest tight with guilt. But he had no choice. He shoved the phone into his pocket.

Minutes felt like hours. Finally, the emergency room doors swung open, and Dr. Evans walked out.

"Sir," the doctor said gravely. "Your wife is pregnant."
