What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 573

The moment the words left his mouth, Dexter practically bolted from the room, terrified that his blunt honesty would send her over the edge and somehow harm the baby.

Noelle's brow furrowed in a tight knot. Deep down, she knew she was greedy. From a very young age, she had realized what mattered most in the world: power and wealth.

They were a woman's best security, but since she lacked the ability to build them herself, she relied on conquering men. Unlike Kaia, who was genuinely practical and hardworking, Noelle poured all her energy into manipulating men, leaving her completely unmotivated in her actual career.

That was why, during her first six years at Aethelstan, she had constantly relied on Kaia to secretly cover for her. Back then, Noelle assumed her scheming went completely unnoticed. She always asked for help discreetly, and Kaia—sweet and naive at the time—had always delivered without taking any of the credit or breathing a word to anyone.

That is, until the day Noelle lured Finnian to the third floor and overheard his private conversation with Kaia.

Lost in her memories, Noelle was suddenly pulled back to reality by the sound of light footsteps in the corridor.

She looked out and saw Kaia walking out of The Main Boardroom, holding a stack of files. A group of top executives followed closely behind her. The very same men from Aethelstan and Veridian Future who used to command the room now trailed after Kaia like obedient subordinates.

"Kaia!" Noelle lunged toward the doorway and called out.

Kaia stopped and turned around.

Noelle immediately closed the distance between them. In response, Kaia instinctively took a few steps back to maintain a safe distance.

The executives behind Kaia exchanged complicated looks when they saw Noelle. Now that the two companies were merging, their workload had exploded, forcing them to work late every single night. Their resentment was palpable. Seeing Noelle standing there, any lingering respect they once had for her vanished. Everyone knew that putting an incompetent person in charge only bred disaster.

Only then did Dexter step away. Noelle glared at Kaia, looking as though she wanted to burn a hole right through her.

"Are you happy now?" Noelle's voice was raspy, the question completely unprompted.

Kaia's expression remained perfectly cool. "Happy about what? Cleaning up the massive project liabilities you created? Why would that make me happy?"

Noelle's face turned completely white. She took an aggressive step forward, prompting Kaia to step back a few feet. Noelle sneered, "Are you that terrified of me?"

"I'm not afraid of you," Kaia replied flatly. "I'm just on guard. I've seen exactly what you're capable of."
