Chapter 1977 He Is Gone
A frown lined Magnus's brow. Just as he was about to push open the door, he heard Denise forcing a cheerful tone as she said, “Should we get a couple more bottles of wine?”
“All right, I know your situation,” the man replied generously. “I'll order two more bottles then.”
“Thank you,” Denise quickly thanked him.
She earned a commission for every bottle sold.
Magnus' grip on the doorknob slowly relaxed. He knew if he walked in now, Denise's effort for the whole day would be for nothing. There'd be no bonus, no commission.
He stepped back, originally planning to wait for Denise outside and hand her the money directly. But then something crossed his mind.
“Should I take a gamble?” Magnus asked himself.
He still remembered a business owner around here once talking about a batch of goods. It wouldn't cost much, and if he managed to buy and resell it, he could triple the profit.
Magnus looked down at the hundred thousand in his hand, wondering if it would be enough. He made up his mind and quickly left, telling a coworker, “Cover for me. I've got something urgent to deal with.”
“Oh, okay then.”
During the day, the nightclub was practically empty. After seeing off the last guest, Denise stepped out, planning to find the manager.
Usually by this time, the manager would've already told the finance department to give her the payment.
But when Denise found him, the manager looked surprised. “Didn't I ask Magnus to give you the money?”
“Magnus?” Denise looked confused.
At that moment, a colleague pushed the door open. “Magnus left more than an hour ago. He asked me to tell you he was taking leave.”
“Taking leave?” The manager blinked, then a wave of unease washed over him. “Denise, are you sure you can count on this friend of yours?”
A hundred thousand wasn't a small amount.
There was no doubt about it now. Magnus had taken the money her parents gave him for their treatment and vanished.
Collapsing to the ground, Denise cried out, “How could I have been so stupid?”
She was talking to herself, eyes blank.
“How could I have trusted someone I barely knew? I was such a fool!” She raised her hand and slapped herself hard across the face.
The pain on her cheek was nothing compared to what she felt inside.
Right then, her phone rang. She grabbed it, thinking it might be Magnus. But it was the hospital.
A flicker of hesitation crossed her face before she answered.
“Denise, didn't you say you'd settle the bill today?” came the voice on the line. “If we don't receive payment soon, we'll have to stop your parents' medication.”
