In that instant, Kingston's view of the young man shifted.
He narrowed his eyes. "Are you certain?"
If that contract were signed, Jason would gain no material advantage from marrying Chelsea, and a divorce would bring him nothing.
Jason nodded firmly. "I'm certain. Give me Chelsea, and I will accept any condition."
He softened, sincerity pouring through each word. "And if you choose to trust me, I will honor you and Phoebe as my own parents."
Kingston fell silent, not unwilling but still wrestling with lingering doubts. Is the boy really this genuine? A question he could not yet answer.
Years in the marketplace had seasoned Kingston well enough to recognize the shadows that lurked in every human heart.
"All right—spend this year getting along with Chelsea. If the two of you are still inseparable by then, and your career has finally found its footing, I'll give my blessing." He paused, then added, "But remember—before the wedding, you will sign the agreement. Non-negotiable."
Jason answered before the echo of Kingston's words died out. "Absolutely."
Kingston and Phoebe offered Chelsea a few last, gentle reminders and then slipped out, closing the door to leave the young couple alone with the hush that follows a verdict.
Relief flooded Chelsea's chest; the boulder that had pressed on her heart finally rolled away.
"Dad finally said yes—we can really be together. Isn't that great? And now you are absolutely forbidden to bring up breaking up ever again, deal?"
Jason smiled as well, crossed the distance, and perched on the edge of her hospital bed, his knees brushing the starched sheets.
"I've got to figure out how to make real money," Jason murmured, determination sharpening his grin. "I swear you'll never regret the choice you made today."
Delight glimmered in Chelsea's eyes, her lashes arching like soft commas.
"I'll run to the office, grab my laptop, and work from here. It'll be easier to look after you," Jason said, already half rising.
Chelsea caught his wrist before he could leave, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Wait."
Jason blinked. "What is it?"
"I need the bathroom," she breathed, cheeks flaming scarlet.
With her parents hovering earlier, embarrassment had forced her to hold it far too long.
Jason slipped an arm around her and nodded. "All right, let me help."
He lifted her gently from the mattress, then—supporting her side—shuffled with tiny, careful steps toward the adjoining restroom.
