When Her Death Couldn't Break Him (Cecilia and Nathaniel) novel Chapter 2217

Nicholas's arms around Cecilia went abruptly stiff.

Cecilia also sensed it and continued, "Long before you married Cassandra, I saw that Jocelyn liked you. Even I, an outsider, could tell. How could you not have noticed?"

Nicholas stayed silent.

Cecilia roughly understood what warped need drove him.

"Did you already know and just pretend you didn't?"

Exposed, Nicholas couldn't produce a single word.

Cecilia let out a cold laugh. "So I was right. You ignored Jocelyn's feelings before, and now that she's married and moved on, you claim she's the one who changed?"

She added, "I did misjudge you back then, and I'm sorry, but Jocelyn never wronged you, did she?"

Nicholas's Adam's apple jerked.

He knew her words were true, yet resentment still burned.

Nicholas lowered his head, hot breath grazing her neck. "Ceci, how did I never notice you could speak like this?"

A shiver knifed through Cecilia.

"Nicholas, don't do this."

He cupped her cheek. "Don't do what?"

Cecilia clenched her teeth hard.

Nicholas, eyes on her flushed face, said, "I regret pretending to be gentle; that softness kept me from the one I love."

A tremor ran the length of Cecilia's body.

"What exactly do you want?"

"I want you!" Nicholas said. "Why should I love you for so long and never have you?"

Violence blazed in his eyes. "You laughed with Calvin today. When you two were alone before, did you already give yourself to him?"

"That's nonsense!" Cecilia shouted.

Nicholas's lips curved. "Is that so? Did I misread you?"

"Calvin and I are just friends—nothing more," Cecilia answered, humiliated and angry.
