Cecilia heard the suspicion in Miranda's voice, but nothing changed on her face.
"What are you talking about?"
She wasn't stupid. There was no way she was going to tell Miranda.
If she admitted something like that, she wasn't worried for herself if Miranda came after her.
She just didn't want one more thing hanging over her mind.
Miranda looked at Cecilia's blank, puzzled face and lowered her voice. "It better not be you. If it is, then even if I have to throw everything away, I still won't let you off."
She said it one word at a time.
Cecilia didn't care about a single word Miranda said.
There was only cold distance in her eyes.
The moment Miranda met that look, her gaze wavered for no reason she could explain, and she pulled her eyes away.
Just then, school let out, and Jon and Elliot came running out toward Cecilia.
"Mommy."
A warm smile filled Cecilia's face in an instant.
It was nothing like the untouchable look she had just worn, the one that kept everyone at a distance.
"Come on. Let's go home and eat."
Cecilia took one child in each hand and led them outside.
Not far away, Nathaniel was already standing beside the car, waiting for the three of them.
From where she stood, Miranda watched Cecilia's family, and the look in her eyes changed.
A picture rose in her head without warning, one that had never been there before.
She was the one picking up her son, and Adrian was waiting for her.
The second that image came up, Miranda quickly shook her head.
"What's so good about that loser? I'm starting a brand-new life now."
After saying that, Miranda stopped waiting and headed for her car.
This time, she really did leave.
She didn't look back.
*****
A year passed.
Charlotte had already given birth.
It was a baby boy, cute as could be.
The minute she finished her recovery leave, she came back to work, like she couldn't wait another day.
"Lottie, why aren't you resting a little longer? Your body's not fully recovered yet. Going back to work now is too tiring," Cecilia said.

Cecilia watched the two of them and smiled, helpless.
A lot had happened over the past year.
Charlotte had given birth, and Miranda had married Julian. Word was, she was pregnant now too.
On top of that, Chelsea and Jason had gotten married as well.
Charlotte walked over. "Boss, Chelsea paid back the money she owed you."
Cecilia nodded. "Mm. Got it."
Jason had made something of himself in his career now. Chelsea hadn't misjudged him.
When the two of them got married, the Rainsworth elders still weren't all that satisfied, but they agreed in the end.
Not long after that, Cecilia's phone started ringing.
She picked it up and glanced at the screen. It was Chelsea.
"Hello, Chelsea. What is it?"
"Cecilia, did you get the money?" Chelsea asked.
"I got it."

"You don't have to be so polite with me," Cecilia said.
