Cassienne rested her head against his shoulder and allowed herself to relax into him.
Dreston’s arm remained around her, steady and warm, holding her close in a way that felt both familiar and new. Neither of them spoke. The silence between them was no longer heavy. It had softened into something calm, something that felt almost right.
Then her phone rang. The sound broke through the quiet moment, and Cassienne flinched slightly. She pulled away gently from him.
“Excuse me,” she said softly.
Dreston let his arm fall back to his side as she reached into her bag and brought out her phone. The screen lit up, showing her secretary’s name.
She answered immediately. “Hello,” she said in a soft voice.
Dreston turned his head slightly and watched her.
“Ma’am, Mr. Sandler wants to confirm if you have done reviewing the proposal.”
Cassienne touched her temple lightly as soon as she heard the name. “Actually, I forgot to review the proposal,” she replied. “Just tell him that I will get back to him.”
“Okay ma’am, I will do that.”
“And Miss Brook,” Cassienne added, her tone becoming more formal and direct, “cancel all my appointments for tomorrow and next. I won’t be in the office until Wednesday. You can reschedule any meetings with the organisations. Thank you.”
“Alright ma’am, I will do that. And take care of yourself ma’am. Bye bye.”
The call ended.
Cassienne let out a quiet breath and dropped her phone on the coffee table before picking up the glass of juice. She took a sip and exhaled slowly.
Dreston had been watching her the entire time because he could not look away.
What he saw unsettled him in a way he did not expect. The woman he remembered had never carried herself like this. She had been quiet and distant, someone who stayed in the background of his life. But the woman sitting in front of him now handled her responsibilities with ease and confidence. She spoke clearly, gave instructions without hesitation, and carried herself like someone used to being in control.
It made him realise how much he had lost. He had not just lost memories of their relationship. He had
lost an entire version of her.
And that thought weighed on him more than he wanted to admit.
For the first time, he felt a sense of frustration that went beyond confusion. It felt like a part of his life

had been taken from him, and no matter how much he tried, he could not reach it.
He leaned back slightly, still looking at her.
From what he remembered, Cassienne had only been his wife by name. A woman chosen by his parents. Someone who had feelings for him while he gave her nothing in return.
But what he was seeing now did not match that memory.
Now, just sitting beside her, he could feel something he could not explain. His body reacted to her presence. His attention stayed on her without effort. There was a connection that he could not deny, even if he did not understand it.
It meant only one thing: At some point, something had changed between them. Something strong enough to make him fall for her. And that was the part he could not remember.
Cassienne placed the glass back on the table and turned slightly toward him. That was when she noticed the way he was looking at her. Then she smiled.
It was a soft, natural smile that came without effort.
Before she could say anything, Dreston spoke. “When I said we should proceed with the marriage arrangements, I mean it, Cass.”
The name came out naturally.
Cassienne blinked, and her eyes filled with emotion almost immediately. That was what he used to call her when everything between them had changed. Hearing it again, even like this, touched something deep inside her.
She tried to steady herself, but the emotion was already there.
“I want to marry you again,” he continued. “And live as your husband.”
His voice was calm, but sincere. “I know you want us to take things slowly, but I don’t think I have that patience anymore. Seeing you this way and the way my body reacts to you cannot be a coincidence. It shows that my body and my heart remember you. It is only the memories that are missing.”
Cassienne’s lips trembled slightly.
“I promise you,” he added, his voice softer now, “that I will remember everything. All the beautiful moments we shared. I will remember all of it.”
Cassienne could not hold herself back anymore. She moved closer to him and wrapped her arms around him, pulling herself into him, by straddling him before pressing her lips against his.
The kiss came suddenly, but it carried everything she had been holding inside.
