Finally, Cassienne returned back home. And now she can breathe. The penthouse was quiet when she entered. The quiet was not enough to stop the chaos in her mind. The door closed behind her. And for a moment, she didn’t move.
Her heels clicked faintly against the marble floor as she stepped further inside, but even that sound felt distant. The events of the past hours clung to her–Corren’s blood, the flashing cameras, the voices, the headlines.
Her body felt heavy. Not weak, just… drained.
She slipped off her heels slowly, leaving them by the entrance. Her fingers moved to the buttons of her jacket, undoing them with quiet movement before letting the fabric fall away.
Behind her, footsteps followed carefully. Ivy Hart stood at a respectful distance, tablet in hand.” Tomorrow’s schedule,” Ivy began gently, her tone measured so as not to overwhelm her.
Cassienne walked toward the living area, her movements slow but controlled.
“You have a meeting with Jeff Sandler at eleven in the morning,” Ivy continued. “Your doctor’s appointment is set for nine. And-” She hesitated slightly.
Cassienne stopped walking. “And?” she asked quietly.
Ivy glanced at the screen. “You have a scheduled meeting with Mr. Dreston Tremont tonight.”
The air shifted. Cassienne’s expression did not change immediately. But something in her stilled. It was a brief pause. She thought about it with a calm expression. “Cancel it.”
Ivy blinked. “Ma’am?”
Cassienne turned slightly. “Cancel my meeting with my husband,” she said calmly. “Let him know I won’t
be able to meet him.”
Her tone was not emotional, and not angry. She only decided.
Ivy nodded quickly. “Understood.”
Cassienne exhaled slowly. “For now,” she added, her voice softer, “I want to rest. No one should disturb
me.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Ivy stepped back, already making a note of it.
Cassienne didn’t wait. She walked toward the bedroom and the door closed behind her. The silence inside was deeper. She stood there for a moment, her back against the door, her eyes closing briefly as if the world outside had finally been shut out.
But her mind was not quiet. It replayed everything. The attack, the hospital, the headlines. Then Dreston. Her chest rose slowly with a breath she didn’t realize she was holding.

She reached for her phone, her fingers moved almost instinctively as she dialed someone. The line connected after a few rings.
“Cass?” Aurora’s voice came through.
Cassienne leaned slightly against the wall. “How is he?” she asked immediately.
There was no need to explain. Aurora understood. “He’s fine,” Aurora Stephens replied. “Resting now. Complaining a little, which I think is a good sign.”
Cassienne let out a quiet breath. “Good.” A pause followed.
Then Aurora spoke again, lighter this time. “You should have seen him earlier,” she added. “Still trying to act strong, even with that injury.”
Cassienne’s lips curved faintly. “That sounds like him.”
They fell into a rhythm, talking. Not about the headlines. Not about Dreston. Just about Corren. They spoke about how he reacted. What the doctor said, and how stubborn he was becoming. It felt normal.
After a while, Aurora’s voice shifted, she sounded softer and thoughtful. “Cass…”
Cassienne straightened slightly. “Hmm?”
Aurora hesitated. “I might be wrong,” she began carefully.
Cassienne listened.
“But…” Another pause. “It feels like Corren still has feelings for you.”
The words landed quietly without any drama or laying of emphasis.
Cassienne did not respond to that.
On the other end, Aurora added quickly, “I’m just saying what I noticed. You don’t have to-”
“It’s fine,” Cassienne cut in gently..Her voice was calm. “I understand.”
Another brief silence followed.
“Get some rest,” Aurora said finally.
“You too.”
The call ended and the room fell still again. Cassienne lowered the phone slowly..Her fingers remained wrapped around it. But her mind caught on one line.
Cass, I think Corren still has feelings for you.
She walked toward the bed and sat down. The words repeated persistently.
Corren still has feelings for you.

Her gaze drifted to nothing in particular. She thought of him. Not the man in the hospital bed. But the one who stepped forward without hesitation. The one who took the blade. The one who said nothing, but acted.
Her fingers tightened slightly, then she shook her head faintly. This was not the time, and definitely not the place. She placed the phone beside her, and lay back slowly against the bed.
Her eyes closed. But rest didn’t come immediately. Because beneath the exhaustion, and beneath the silence, everything was shifting. And she could feel it. Even without seeing it. Even without understanding it fully.
Something had changed. And the worst part of it was that Cassienne wasn’t sure if everything would go as planned.
