Chapter Three Hundred And Fourteen: I Love You
Cassienne hesitated for a moment before shaking her head gently “Just family matters”
Jeff nodded slowly, not pushing further. “Those are usually the worst kind”
For a second, she wondered how much he understood simply by observing people Jeff Sandler was more perceptive than most people realized.
He glanced toward the development floor outside before speaking again. “You know, when I first approached you for this collaboration, everyone told me the same thing.”
Cassienne looked at him curiously. “What was that?”
“That you were brilliant but emotionally detached, Difficult to read. Difficult to approach.”
“And now?”
Jeff smiled faintly. “Now I think they were completely wrong.”
Cassienne frowned slightly. “How so?”
“Because people like you only look cold when they’re protecting something.”
The words settled strangely inside her.
Before she could respond, her phone vibrated again across the desk nearby.
The moment she saw Dreston’s name on the screen, her expression softened almost immediately.
Jeff noticed it. And smiled knowingly. “I’ll leave you to your husband.”
Cassienne ignored the teasing look he gave her as she answered the call. “DT.”
“Still working?”
His voice sounded calmer now than earlier.
That alone eased something inside her. “A little.”
“You promised me you wouldn’t overwork yourself”
“You also promised me you would sleep,” she replied immediately
That earned a quiet laugh from him
God.
She missed him already.
Cassienne walked slowly toward the window again while speaking to him “How’s Tina?”
“She’s stable. Ray assigned a private neurological team to her case.”
Cassienne nodded quietly despite knowing he could not see her. “That’s good.”
There was a brief silence on the line before Dreston spoke again. “Cass… I’ve been thinking.”
Her expression shifted immediately. “About Harold?”
“Yes.”
She remained quiet and let him continue.
“I watched him carefully today. I am considering confronting. That man makes me think that bringing him closer to Tina might be harmful. Every time I mentioned the lab, he reacted before he could stop himself. Not confusion. Not grief, but fear.”
Cassienne’s fingers tightened slightly around the phone.
Dreston continued calmly, “I think he knows more than he’s willing to say. Maybe not everything. But enough. And I am not ready to risk it.”
Cassienne lowered her eyes toward the city lights below.
“I received a call from Aunt Helena today,” she changed the topic quietly.
The line became silent immediately.
“What did she say?”
Cassienne leaned lightly against the glass. “She said my mother and the older generation have been hiding the truth from me. She implied the Tremonts are involved in my father’s death.”
The silence that followed felt heavier this time.
Then finally, Dreston spoke softly. “Do you believe her?”
Cassienne closed her eyes briefly.
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Firmly.
And honestly.
“Whatever happened back then has nothing to do with you,” she continued quietly. “You’re not responsible for the sins of older people, DT. Neither am I.”
On the other side of the line, Dreston said nothing for several seconds.
Because those words affected him more deeply than she realized.
Cassienne continued softly, “I want the truth too. But not at the cost of us.”

Her hand rested gently against her stomach again. “I won’t let their past destroy the family we’re trying to build, DT.”
Dreston exhaled slowly.
And for the first time since Tina’s accident, some of the pressure inside his chest eased slightly.
Because despite all the confusion surrounding them, Cassienne still chose him. Not blindly, but consciously. “I love you,” he said quietly.
