Chapter Three Hundred And Twenty-Eight: Interruption
Daisy stared at Ray without replying to him. Of course she wanted him. But that wasn’t the issue right now, was it?
The music inside the ballroom seemed to disappear. So did the crowd, the lights, and a the surrounding conversations. Everything faded into the background until the world narrowed down to just the two of them. All she could see was him. All she could hear was the question he had just asked.
“What if I asked you to marry me right now?”
Her heart was beating so hard she was convinced he could hear it. For weeks she had imagined this moment. Sometimes while lying awake at night, sometimes while pretending to work, and sometimes while staring at absolutely nothing and wondering where everything had gone wrong between them. And now it was happening.
What now? She could say, yes I will marry you and he will call off his engagement. And what then? Break another woman’s heart? A thousand thoughts crossed her mind and yet, she still couldn’t reply to him.
Ray was standing right in front of her not joking, not teasing, and not avoiding the subject. He was serious. Completely serious.
Daisy opened her mouth. Nothing came out.
Ray waited patiently. For once, he wasn’t trying to rush her. For once, he simply wanted her answer.

And then, came the interruption.
“There you two are!”
The familiar voice shattered the moment completely.
Daisy nearly jumped. Ray closed his eyes slowly, painfully, like a man suffering through a personal tragedy.
Corren Thornwyck walked toward them with Aurora beside him. Neither of them had any idea what they had just interrupted. At least Corren didn’t. But Aurora realized it immediately. The moment she saw Daisy’s expression and Ray’s face, her eyes widened slightly.
“Oh.” She said, “Oh no.” She added.
Corren continued walking, completely unaware. Aurora briefly considered abandoning him and pretending she wasn’t with him. Unfortunately, it was too late. The damage was already done.
“Why do both of you look so strange?” Corren asked.
Nobody answered.
Aurora covered her face. Ray looked like he wanted to throw Corren through the nearest window. Daisy suddenly found the floor fascinating.
Finally Aurora spoke. “Did we interrupt something?”
Daisy almost choked. Ray looked away. Corren frowned. “What did we interrupt?”
Aurora stared at him. Then stared harder. The man still didn’t understand. Amazing, absolutely amazing.
Fortunately for Corren, Daisy quickly rescued him. “No,”
The lie came out far too quickly. Ray looked at her. Daisy refused to look back. Aurora immediately understood she was lying, but she kindly decided not to expose her. Corren remained blissfully ignorant.
“Good,” he said.
Ray wanted to resign from the gala. Possibly from life itself.

The Corren casually added, “I wanted to properly introduce Aurora and myself.”
That finally shifted the conversation.
Ray looked between them. Then he looked again. His brain suddenly caught up. “Wait”
Corren nodded. “Yes.”
Ray blinked. “You got engaged?”
“Apparently.”
“To Aurora?”
Corren looked offended. “That is generally how engagements work.”
Daisy burst out laughing. Even Aurora smiled. Ray pointed at him. “No. Nobody told me this.”
“You were busy.”
“I was in another city.”
“Exactly.”
Ray looked at Aurora. Then back at Corren. Then at Aurora again. “You agreed?”
