When Love Finds Its Way Back (Cassienne and Dreston) novel Chapter 389

After the long silence. Ray stepped in front of the wheelchair, forcing the nurse to stop.

“Listen to me.”

Cassienne looked at him.

“I know you want to see Dreston. I know you have been waiting for this moment.” His voice became softer. “But we need to examine you first. We need to know how far your labour has progressed. We need to check the baby’s heartbeat and make sure both of you are safe.”

“But I am fine.”

“You are having painful contractions and your water has broken.”

“That doesn't mean something is wrong.”

“It doesn't," Ray agreed. “And I want to keep it that way.”

Cassienne looked toward the end of the hallway. The intensive care unit was in the opposite direction.

The delivery room doors opened. And the nurses pushed Cassienne inside while Ray gave instructions.

The others were told to wait outside until the initial examination was complete.

Cassienne looked at all of them and felt the fear inside her ease slightly. Then the doors closed.

A nurse helped Cassienne onto the bed.

The medical team moved efficiently around her, attaching monitors and checking her blood pressure.

Ray stood beside the attending doctor as they examined her.

Cassienne looked toward the door. “Has anyone called my mother?”

“Abigail may have already contacted her.”

Cassienne closed her eyes briefly. Her mother should know. Everyone should know.

Dreston was awake.

The baby was coming.

The two pieces of news were almost too much for her heart to hold at once.

The monitor picked up the baby’s heartbeat. The fast, steady sound filled the room.

Cassienne turned her head toward it, and her eyes filled with tears. “Is the baby alright?”

“Yes,” the doctor said. “The heartbeat is strong.”

Cassienne released a breath. “And me?”

“Your blood pressure is slightly elevated, but that is not surprising.”

“How far has the labour progressed?”

“We are checking.”

Cassienne looked at Ray. “Can I see Dreston after this?”

Ray sighed. “Let us finish first.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because you keep asking before we have the answer.”

Cassienne frowned.

The attending doctor completed the examination and removed her gloves.

“You are in active labour.”

Cassienne stared at her. “How active?”

“Enough that we should keep you here.”

“I cannot leave for five minutes?”

“No.”

“What if Dreston is brought here?”

Ray’s eyebrows lifted. “No.”

The attending doctor looked amused. “Your husband has just regained consciousness after major surgery.”

Cassienne looked at her hopefully. “So you know about him.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Then you understand my condition?”

“I understand that he needs to remain where his doctors can observe him.”

Cassienne looked disappointed.

Ray folded his arms. “You heard her.”

Cassienne glared at him. Another contraction started before she could answer.

The nurse helped her breathe through it. This one was stronger. Cassienne gripped the bedsheet and cried out.

The pain seemed to wrap around her entire lower body.

The nurse looked uncomfortable. “He keeps asking for his wife.”

Despite the situation, Ray closed his eyes for a second.

Cassienne pointed toward the door. “Go.”

Ray looked at her.

“You heard her. Go.”

“I cannot leave you.”

“I have several doctors here.”

The attending doctor nodded. “We can manage.”

Cassienne looked at Ray firmly. “Go and stop my husband before he tears something inside his body.”

Ray hesitated.

Then he looked at the attending doctor. “Call me if anything changes.”

“We will.”

He turned back to Cassienne. “Do not leave this bed.”

“Just go.”

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

Ray headed for the door.

Cassienne called after him. “Tell Dreston I love him.”

Ray stopped.

“And tell him the baby is coming.”

“I will.”

“And tell him I’m fine.”

Ray looked at her. “Are you?”

Cassienne stared back. “Yes.”

And then, another pain began.
