Chapter 360 A Hand That Won’t Obey
“The Stone family found Witch Doctor to perform my surgery?” Jensen asked sharply.
“Yes,” Lucy replied, a little surprised at his tone but nodding nonetheless.
Jensen’s brow furrowed deeper. “Who invited him? Natalie?”
“No. It was that live–in son–in–law of the Stone family… what was his name again?”
She searched her memory.
Jensen’s face darkened. “Baron.”

“That’s it! Supposedly Witch Doctor and Baron are close. He invited Witch Doctor on Ms. Stone’s behalf to operate on you.”
At that, Jensen’s expression grew uglier.
So Baron had made sure he had no opening at all.
He had taken a blade for Natalie, and Baron repaid it by finding Witch Doctor for him. On the surface, it made them even–Natalie owed him nothing more.
No.
That wasn’t right.
Five years ago Natalie had given him one of her ribs to save his life. That debt remained.
Jensen’s eyes lit with sudden urgency.
“Lucy, how long was I out? From surgery to waking up?”
She thought for a moment. “Nearly an entire afternoon. Why, Mr. Jensen?”
“Did Natalie come to see me?”
He reasoned it through. Yes, she must have gone to the police station for questioning after the kidnapping, but that wouldn’t have taken all day. He had almost died–surely she would have come to check on him.
He craned his neck toward the door. “Lucy, has anyone from the Stone family been here? Witch Doctor should’ve told them my surgery succeeded. Now that I’m awake, shouldn’t

Lucy blinked at him. “Mr. Jensen, the Stone family was here the whole time. They waited outside during your operation. After Witch Doctor said you’d be fine, they left.”
The words doused him like ice water. His fragile hope was extinguished.
Natalie would never be that cold.
No–this was Baron’s doing. That bastard was cutting him off from her at every turn.
“Lucy, give me my phone. I’ll call Natalie myself.”
He tried to sit up, but Lucy stopped him.
“Mr. Jensen, please! You’re still weak. Witch Doctor said the poison is cleared but recovery will take time. And the toxin isn’t fully gone.”
Her gaze flickered to his left hand.
Jensen, too focused on Natalie, hadn’t noticed. Her words froze him. “What do you mean, not fully gone?”
Never before had he wanted to see Natalie so desperately.
Lucy hesitated, then said softly, “Witch Doctor said the poison damaged your nerves. Your left hand… may never regain full strength.”
Jensen stared at her, stunned.
He looked down at his hand, tried to flex his fingers–nothing. The dead weight mocked him. The urge to move, met with utter helplessness, nearly drove him mad.
And then he thought of Natalie.
When Sharon had smashed her right hand, robbing her of the art she loved–had she felt this same despair?
He was only losing his left hand, yet the devastation was unbearable. Natalie had lost her dominant hand, the one, she used to create her world.
So it was true: you couldn’t understand pain until it struck your own body.
His chest ached with every beat as he stared at his unresponsive hand.

Sharon, noticing he hadn’t spoken to her since waking and now seeing his anguish, felt a twist of unease. She stepped forward, pushing Lucy aside.
“Jensen, don’t worry. Your hand will recover. Look at mine–my right hand still aches when it rains, and I can’t use it properly. But if the Stone family could find Witch Doctor for you, then surely if you ask them, he can treat me too. Isn’t that right?”
Her eyes glittered with calculation she didn’t bother to hide.
Jensen saw it then–her scheming, her ugliness.
For the first time, the woman he had protected for years looked like a stranger.
