“Seriously, what else could it be? It’s obvious the Morrow family greased some palms! Remember last week when Celeste got pushed down the stairs by Serena and broke her hand? The video was crystal clear, but the school did nothing, just deleted the video and silenced the issue. Anyone could guess the Morrow family pulled some strings!”
Everyone glanced at Serena with eyes full of resentment, daring only to be angry silently.
Only Rowan genuinely clenched her fists, cheering her on!
The current priority for the arts department was organizing the welcome party for the freshmen, aiming to imbue them with a sense of cultural warmth. This annual event was set for the last Friday night of September, which was this coming Friday night.
This was Sidney’s last welcome party as the head of the arts department, making it more meaningful and grandiose than ever.
As the newly appointed deputy director, Serena’s involvement in such a crucial event was inevitable.
As soon as the school bell rang at the end of the day. Morgan sought out Serena from class 19 to help set up the venue.
“You can’t handle tuning instruments, editing music, creating effects, or designing the venue, so you’ll assist us instead!”
Morgan deliberately made the division of labor clear to demonstrate Serena’s incompetence and how unfit she was to be deputy director. Though Sidney had mentioned it was only a temporary position pending trial, everyone knew it was just to placate them.
Even people from class 19 said the Morrow family had bribed the school to secure a position in the student council for Serena, to gold–plate her resume.
Others showed disdain; a useless person who knew nothing. Why should she be deputy director, reducing their hardworking officials to what? It was an insult!
“Serena, hang these lights up. There’s a ladder!”
Morgan commanded.
Serena glanced over.
Morgan didn’t give her a chance to refuse. “Look, everyone else is doing technical work. This is the only job you can handle.”

Usually, the arts department prided itself on being too delicate to do any heavy lifting, always asking the sports department for help. But now that Serena was there, why bother the athletes?
Just earlier, two members from the sports department had shown up, only to be sent away by Morgan.
“Don’t worry, I’ll hold the ladder for you.”
Morgan said.
Without a word, Serena picked up two lights and climbed up. The ladder wasn’t tall enough, and she wasn’t tall enough; she had to stand on the very top to hang the lights.
Everyone watched, half hoping she’d fall to learn a lesson, yet also worried about the serious injuries she might sustain if she did–they couldn’t be responsible for that. But no one stopped her.
Serena hung one light, then two, three, and four…
She moved up and down, steady and sure, with no sign of falling.
Morgan couldn’t stand it anymore.
Just as an official responsible for the backdrop walked over with a bucket of paint, Morgan subtly lifted her foot. The official stumbled, the paint bucket flew out, hitting the ladder base.
Morgan nudged her foot, causing the ladder to slide. It looked like Serena was about to fall.
Morgan quickly stepped back, but somehow the ladder base caught on her pants, tripping her. She slipped and fell right into the spilled paint on the floor, overturning a bucket of water in the process.
The stage turned into a chaotic mix of water and paint.
Serena, still on the ladder, didn’t come down; she didn’t want to dirty the new shoes Olivia had bought for her. Balancing on the ladder like stilts, she stepped off the stage, dodging the “stilts” that caused others to fall over themselves, creating a complete mess.
Knowing that Morgan had taken Serena to set up the venue, Sidney dragged Celeste along to watch the spectacle.
Did she not know the temper of her people?
The student council was fiercely competitive because it was filled with talented individuals, none of whom respected the others, and minor sabotages were inevitable.
Suddenly throwing a good–for–nothing country bumpkin into the mix, wouldn’t she become a

They’d definitely take this chance to take her down.
And Celeste knew all too well the nature of those in the student council.
Taylor didn’t want her in the student council just so she could have a peaceful high school life without being exposed to these vicious undercurrents too early.
“Do you think she’ll end up covered in paint, or shoved into a trash can?”
Sidney was in high spirits, feeling vindicated for her best friend; she was utterly relaxed!
Celeste chuckled, “I think they’ll make her climb the ladder to hang the lights and then she’ll break a leg!”
Although that seemed a bit severe, who told her to dare break Celeste’s hand?
After today, the student council would become her nightmare.
