Chapter 31 Happy Birthday

Kelly looked smug as she called out deliberately, “Serena, want to say hi to Lebron?”
Lebron stared at her back on the screen, his heart pounding like a drum. He didn’t even dare to blink. Just as Serena turned, revealing half of her face and almost meeting his gaze, the video cut off again.
Serena didn’t say a word.
Neither did Olivia.
Lebron gripped his phone tightly, as if that fleeting glimpse had frozen in his mind. His lips were sealed, jaw tight, but a strange, excited gleam flickered in his eyes.
“Lebron might not be feeling well today,” Olivia offered quickly.
Serena showed no emotion, which only made Olivia feel even more guilty.
Kelly, meanwhile, became unnaturally gracious. “Lebron’s a bit withdrawn. He doesn’t like strangers. When he’s home, it’s probably best if you don’t touch his things or appear in front of him too often…”
“That’s not true! Lebron is very easy to get along with!” Olivia interrupted sharply, a rare note of disapproval in her eyes.
As the sole heiress of the Morrow family, Kelly had always been showered with love. Olivia herself had once doted on her. She’d never even raised her voice before. But now, she was being scolded–and for Serena.
Kelly’s face darkened. “You can’t push a rope.”
Even the Reed family was Serena’s birth family, and when Zachary had thrown a tantrum, they kicked her out without hesitation. Here in the Morrow family, Serena was nothing more than an adoptive daughter. If Lebron had an episode–which he always did–who was going to take her side? If he exploded, not even ten Zachs could compare. She wanted to see how they’d handle Serena then.
“Kelly!” Olivia’s voice turned cold. Why was her niece becoming more difficult with age? Why did she insist on creating division in their family?
The scolding stung. Kelly flushed and stomped off to another vanity, flinging her tiara onto the
table.
When Olivia didn’t follow to comfort her, she only grew more furious.

Olivia’s approach to parenting had always been firm: you could spoil a child, but wrong was still wrong. If Kelly had been her daughter, she would’ve raised her like Thanos–with discipline.
“Serena, are you hungry? Want me to take you out for a late–night snack?”
Serena glanced at Rowan. “Mom, I promised Rowan we’d go celebrate together.”
Though a little disappointed, Olivia was genuinely pleased her daughter had made a real friend.
“Alright. It’s late. Be careful.” She opened her purse and pulled out all the cash inside, placing it in Serena’s hand.
Ever since finding out Serena preferred cash, Olivia had made sure to always carry some for
her.
Before leaving, she gave Kelly one last look. She said nothing and walked away.
Kelly’s eyes turned red instantly.
Every grievance from today came flooding up at once. Ever since Serena joined the Morrow family, Kelly’s shopping money had dried up. Even the attention she used to get at school had shifted. Everyone was looking at Serena now. Why?
Just a country bumpkin–why did she get everything?
Seeing her cry made the other girls uncomfortable.
Rowan, worried that people might start rumors about the pretty new girl bullying the heiress, quickly grabbed Serena’s hand and pulled her away.
“There’s still one last part of the ceremony. I think you might win something. Let’s go check it
out.”
She ran fast, dragging Serena along with her.
They arrived just in time for the final act–Sidney’s performance.
Sidney stood center stage, holding her violin. She wore a formal black gown, her expression solemn and reverent.
“Tonight marks my last performance at Haven High. Tomorrow, I’ll be leaving for another country. It may be years before I see any of you again.”
The room fell completely silent. Many people’s eyes began to glisten with emotion.
“I had originally planned to play “The Light‘ as my farewell piece. But after hearing some of the

She didn’t say Serena’s name. She didn’t have to. Everyone understood.

Even if she didn’t care for Serena personally, Sidney had to admit that Serena’s rendition of “The Light” was the best she had ever heard.
And Sidney took music seriously.
“But there’s one piece that fits the violin even better. It’s ‘The Shadow,‘ the companion to “The Light.“”
Where there is light, there is shadow. Shadow is only a reflection–light is the source. Tonight, Sidney had chosen to be the shadow to Serena’s light.
It was her form of tribute.
Celeste’s face went ghost–white.
Sidney had once told her she would never perform “The Shadow” in public–because no one was worthy of being her light.
And yet, here she was.
“The Light” was a warning. “The Shadow” was a requiem.
Light and shadow together–this was life. The beginning and the end of everything.
