Chapter 33 The Skewers and the Setup.

The spotlight swung toward Class 19’s section, but Serena was nowhere to be seen.

Someone mumbled awkwardly, “She probably took the five hundred dollars and went to buy a console.”

In truth, Serena had already dragged Rowan to the alley behind the school to get something delicious.

She’d been craving grilled skewers for a long time. But she never had the money–and neither did Rowan. Every time they passed by, they could only swallow their longing. But tonight, the two girls finally got their wish.

Back at the venue, as the event wrapped up, Student Council Vice President Joshua Johnson led the other council members to help send Sidney off.

Naturally, Celeste came along.

They had just stepped into the grilled skewer shop when they saw Serena and Rowan–of all people. Enemies meeting face–to–face never ended peacefully.

Everything Serena had said while accepting her award earlier was basically a public slap at the student council–calling them bullies who abused their power.

It was the first time the student council’s authority had been openly challenged by a nobody.

“Joshua, just eat,” Sidney said flatly. She didn’t want her final night at Haven High to turn into a scene. Without looking twice at Serena, she headed for a seat at the very back, out of sight and hopefully out of mind.

Just being in the same room as someone like Serena made her feel like the air was tainted. Even her appetite suffered.

Serena didn’t spare them a single glance.

After the skewers, she helped Rowan get a ride first, then waited alone by the road for her own.

Sidney had a flight to catch the next morning and didn’t plan on staying long. She was going to hail a cab, but after spotting Serena nearby, she instinctively changed direction.

As she passed, three men walked by.

All three wore hoods.

Even though it was nighttime and the heat had finally faded, wearing hoods at that hour was suspicious as hell.

Sidney’s instincts kicked in. She quickened her pace and pulled out her phone.

Serena, chewing on a post–meal lollipop, glanced toward them. She pulled out her own phone and typed: “If I do something good, does that waive my next penalty?”

Zephyr replied instantly: “Yes, Serena! They’re backed by The All–Seeing Net. Aspen wouldn’t dare go back on the deal!”

Serena didn’t care about whatever weird rating she’d get. But that money? That was hard- earned. No way she was letting someone else decide what to do with it.

She opened her camera, hit record, and followed the three men down the block.

Ten minutes later, Sidney stood frozen, staring at the three men collapsed on the ground- moaning, unable to speak. Her shock was no less than when she’d heard Serena play “The Light.”

She knew exactly where those guys had come from. They didn’t strike just anywhere–they had targeted her hands. The intent was obvious.

Malvaria Royal Music Academy had only given one slot to Clovencia. There were plenty of others waiting for her to screw up. She just hadn’t expected them to be so bold–attacking her on a public street.

If Serena hadn’t known how to fight… she didn’t even want to imagine the consequences.

Still, thanking someone like her? That was hard to swallow.

She hesitated, trying to find the right words. “Um…”

“Wait a second,” Serena interrupted, fiddling with her phone. During the fight, she’d accidentally hit the back button and stopped the recording.

She restarted the video. “Alright. You can say it now.”

Sidney stared at her. “You’re pointing the camera at me? Are you serious?”

Sidney’s skin crawled.

“You don’t know how? I can help,” Serena said calmly. “Repeat after me. “Thank you, Serena, for saving me. I promise to be a better person moving forward.””

Sidney was speechless. What the hell? Who’s the one that actually needs to improve here?

Neck stiff with rage, Sidney looked like she’d rather bite her tongue than say it. Not a hint of gratitude could be found on her face.

Serena’s patience was clearly wearing thin. “Say the line, and we’re even. Otherwise, I’ll consider breaking your hands like I did theirs.”

Sidney didn’t think she was joking. Celeste’s wrist was still in a cast, after all.

If her hands were broken, her music career would be over.

“Thank you, Serena, for saving me. I’ll try to be a better person from now on. Happy?”

Serena stopped recording and pocketed her phone without sparing her a second glance. She turned and walked away.

“What are you planning to do with that video?” Sidney called after her.

Serena looked her up and down. “You’re too poor to extort.”

Sidney was speechless.

Had she–just now–been called poor… by a broke orphan from the countryside?

Boiling with rage, Sidney turned and kicked the men on the ground a few times.

This was all their fault–getting her blackmailed by Serena.

Serena got into her ride and immediately sent the video to Zephyr.

After watching, Zephyr went silent for a long moment.

“Serena, forcing someone to record a video like that doesn’t count…”
