Chapter 35 The One He Chose
Even through the glass, it was easy to see the bluish tint on the boy’s skin

Olivia couldn’t hold back her tears–they fell fast and hard. Thanon’s face was red and his throwe tight with emotion. Arbor Morrow placed a heavy hand on his wife and won’s thondders, then turned to his newly adopted daughter.
“Serena, come with me”
“Okay”
He led her into a nearby hospital room and poured her a glass of water. “Did that vente poate
Serena shook her head,
Arbor gave a small smile of relief. “It’s alright if you were scared. You don’t have to act brave
around me,
Serena took a sip the water soothed her throat. “What triggered Lebrons episoder
“Well he got a little too excited. He can’t handle strong emotions”
He couldn’t very well admit it was because Lebron had heard Serena wanted to buy him a game console. The boy had stayed up all night, watching Olivia’s video of her speech on repeat. That exhaustion had taken its toll.
Lebron could be incredibly stubborn. If he wanted to do something, no one could stop him.
But Arbor couldn’t tell Serena that–it would only make her feel guilty.
Serena didn’t press the issue, but she mentally noted the importance of avoiding emotional extremes with Lebron
“What’s wrong, with his skin?”
“When he was three, he was poisoned. I searched everywhere–no one could cure him” Arbor let out a bitter laugh. “The doctors say it’s deep in his lungs now. There’s not much time left”
The weight of middle age, of helplessness, kept Arbor from shedding tears. But Serena could feel the despair behind his words.
“Before all this, he said he wanted a little sister, So we went to the orphanage. And the moment

he and your mom saw you they both chose you.”
Serena’s head jerked up. Lebron… didn’t hate her?
Finisher
“You’re a bit older than he imagined his little sister would be, but he liked you anyway. He’s just afraid you’d think he’s a monster. That’s why he’s been hiding in the mountains…”
Arbor looked into her calm, composed face, “You… understand what I mean, right?”
Even a hint of rejection from Serena could crush Lebron.
Serena felt something shift inside her. It was unfamiliar. “Lebron really… likes me?”
All she could remember were Zachary’s eyes filled with disdain and disgust–how he couldn’t wait to kick her out, to make her disappear forever,
Arbor had heard about what happened in the Reed Family. Seeing the hesitation in her eyes, he gently placed a hand on her shoulder. “Of course he does.”
Serena lowered her gaze. Her lips moved slightly, and on that emotionless little face, the faintest dimple appeared–barely visible.
Arbor let out a silent breath of relief. But he didn’t want to push her to face a “monster” too soon. “It’s okay if you don’t want to see him yet. Wait until he’s out of the ICU
Serena set the cup down and said seriously, “I’m not afraid.”
Arbor didn’t know what to say–he just felt incredibly comforted. Serena was such a considerate child.
After a full day and night in the ICU, Lebron was moved to a regular room the next morning.
None of them had left the hospital.
That morning, Arbor went to get breakfast, Olivia and Thanos had fallen asleep on the couch.
Serena stood up and, seeing no one else awake, gently placed her fingers on Lebron’s wrist. Her expression immediately tightened.
He really was poisoned. The toxin had spread deep into his lungs. No medicine could help now -but that didn’t mean it was completely untreatable.
The boy’s fingers twitched.
Serena turned, meeting his slightly panicked eyes. “You’re awake?”
Lebron opened his mouth, but his lips and throat were painfully dry.

Serena poured him a glass of warm water, inserted a straw, and held it to his lips.
Lebron hesitated, then bit down gently. As he sipped, warmth slowly spread through his body.
He snuck a glance at her face. She was really pretty. Prettier even than when he’d watched her from afar at the orphanage. But her expression was so distant and cold. He wasn’t sure if she hated him or not.
He stayed still, saying nothing.
After checking his pulse and complexion again, Serena asked, “Does your mouth feel bitter?”
Lebron didn’t know how to answer that.
“I’ve got candy.” Serena pulled a small bottle from her bag and poured one into her palm. “Want some?”
Lebron’s pale face turned slightly red. He opened his mouth.
The candy melted on his tongue–not overly sweet, but enough to wash away the bitterness rising from his throat and chest.
“Serena…” he finally said.
Her heart skipped. That voice–it felt like something long lost had just been returned to her.
“Want another one?” Serena smiled, her dimples soft and shallow. The boy liked her even more.
“Yes.”
Arbor returned just in time to see the warm, quiet moment between the two kids.
