Chapter 45 Hayes Corp Connections
Four hundred thousand dollars was nothing against the millions needed for treatment.
Wendy cast Mica a glance but didn’t comment.
“No need. I’m not short on money for now,” Arbor said.
even tens of millions
Mica nearly popped her eyes out. They needed millions, yet they claimed they weren’t short? Just how much money did the main branch have? Was it even appropriate for a farmer to be this rich?
Since Arbor said they weren’t short, even Madam Dorothy didn’t mind showing a bit of generosity. “I’ve got a few hundred thousand lying around. If you need it, just say so.”
Arbor nodded.
Not long after, Mica phoned Nathan to say the main branch wasn’t after their money. Only then did Nathan feel safe enough to come back.
He arrived just before Arbor’s family was about to leave. “Arbor, Olivia, sorry – I’ve been so busy today…”
His over–the–top enthusiasm only made his guilt more obvious.
Wendy averted her gaze, unable to watch.
Nathan hadn’t come to make small talk. Pulling Arbor aside, he got to his real question. “Arbor, do you know anyone at Hayes Corp?”
Arbor blinked. “No. Why?”
Nathan’s eyes lit up, though he quickly reined it in. “No reason. Just curious.”
Arbor knew Nathan was keeping something to himself but didn’t press. After a bit more polite chatter, he left with his wife and children.
Mica immediately pulled her husband aside. “What did you say to him?”
She was worried Nathan might be giving the main branch money again.
Nathan shook his head. “I just asked about Hayes Corp. They gave Morrow Corp a three- hundred–thousand–dollar grant earmarked for the Wading Waters Bay project.”
It wasn’t a huge sum, but because it was targeted funding, it boosted their chances of winning

practically a semi–official gustande. Barring surprises, the project would be theirs
“Dad, you mean the Bayes Corp from Ardenos?”
“That’s right. Why, Kelly – you know them?”
A faint smile curved Kelly’s lipe. “This summer, I was bored and took an online assessment from Bayes Corp. I passed the preliminary and second rounds, and now I’m just waiting for the final”
“Really?”
Kelly nodded. “Only three people from Evervale City made it to the finals, and they’ll pick just
one.”
Mica beamed. “You’re the top student in Evervale City. Who could beat you?”
–
It was true. She’d always been first in the city until that one time Serena, with suspected cheating, had snatched the spot.
“They say the final winner will not only get a three–hundred–thousand–dollar prize from Hayes Corp but also become Jackson Smith’s personally selected student.”
Jackson Smith – one of the top three researchers at the Horizon Research Institute. Becoming his student was like having a cheat code for life.
Could this three–hundred–thousand–dollar grant have been Hayes Corp’s way of supporting Kelly?
The thought was almost too good to believe. If they could forge a connection with Hayes Corp. Nathan wouldn’t have to rely on Arbor’s contacts anymore. No more cleaning up their messes, wasting money, or feeling inferior every time he saw Arbor.
Mica was all smiles. “Kelly, you’ve really made us proud! Mom, I think we should throw a banquet to celebrate her.”
Madam Dorothy nodded. “Kelly’s so capable she’s caught Hayes Corp’s eye. Here – take this card and use it.”
Nathan took out a card as well. “This is my secondary card. Spend as you like.”
Mica felt triumphant. Nathan doted on Kelly, but deep down he still believed the family business should go to a son. Since she couldn’t give him one, and with Madam Dorothy pushing him toward grooming her nephew Craig, she’d been uneasy for a long time,
Now, looking at the two bank cards in Kelly’s hands, Mica felt as though she’d scored a major victory. She even cast a sidelong, smug glance at Wendy.

Wendy sht sipping her tea, her expression polite but unexcited. Truth be told, she didn’t believe Hayes Corp would funnel money to support someone merely in the finals of their selection process. That wasn’t how top conglomerates operated.
Still, she wasn’t about to dampen their mood. Silence was the better choice.
“Wendy, don’t you think our Kelly’s amazing?”
But Mica wasn’t about to let her stay silent. She wanted Wendy to admit that Kelly was more capable and promising than her own son.
“Kelly is capable,” Wendy said with a smile. She set down her cup, took out a box, and handed it to Kelly — a gemstone necklace worth about as much as the bracelet she’d given Serena.
Mica’s mood soured instantly. She even glanced at the bank card she’d once considered giving Arbor, but Wendy pretended not to notice.
