Chapter 48 Magnetic Needles and Hidden Agendas
Serena leaned against the doorway, unmoved.

Judging by the man’s complexion, he didn’t have long to live. At this rate, it would only be a
matter of months.
–
For someone whose background she didn’t know and who was clearly at odds with Leon should she even bother treating him?
“Come here.”
In just the span of that moment, his throat had swollen and his voice had gone hoarse; the healthy façade he’d worn in front of Leon had completely collapsed.
How could someone exert that much control over himself?
With his life–saving medication taken away, he reached a hand toward her.
Serena hesitated, then stepped closer.
–
His palm was warm against hers. Eyes shut, clinging to his last sliver of lucidity, he said, “My name’s Hayes. Sebastian Hayes. Don’t be afraid of the man from before –
he won’t hurt you…”
Serena blinked. “Mm.”
The moment the word left her lips, Sebastian passed out.
Noah’s eyes went bloodshot with panic. “Where’s Zayden? Go get him now!”
Sebastian’s hand still gripped hers. This close, she could feel the uneven rhythm of his breathing, the slight tremors of a body unable to escape its own torment, even in unconsciousness.
She took his pulse. Minutes ago, it had been strong and steady. Now it was as if a dam had burst, destruction flooding through him until nothing remained but wreckage – then silence, as his vitality withered away.
Using her family’s secret techniques on someone whose background she didn’t trust was taboo.
The last time she’d saved him, he’d been unconscious and hadn’t felt what she’d done. But now, surrounded by his own people, she didn’t take the risk though she wasn’t about to lose her very first five–hundred–thousand–dollar monthly client.
—
Noah still looked at her with hope. “Ms. Serena, didn’t you say you had a secret formula that could help Mr. Hayes?”

She coughed lightly. “Just some massage techniques.”
Finished
Noah watched as she began working on Sebastian. One thought went through his head: Which back–alley massage parlor had she learned this from? Daring to charge Mr. Hayes half a million? If she weren’t the only woman he wasn’t allergic to, he’d have tossed her out already.
Forcing down his temper, Noah said, “Ms. Serena’s technique… is quite professional.”
“Twenty years of professional therapeutic massage,” Serena replied.
Noah had no words for that.
Before his patience snapped completely, Zayden Smith finally arrived.
“All nonessential personnel, out!”
Opening his medical case, he pulled on gloves and took out instruments, issuing orders without
pause.
Then his eyes landed on the young woman still sitting at Sebastian’s side, and his scowl deepened. “That includes you!”
Though it was their first meeting, Serena could sense his hostility.
Noah quickly explained, “Ms. Serena is the nurse Mr. Hayes hired. He said she could stay during treatment.”
Zayden froze. “He really said that?”
Noah nodded. There was no way he’d joke about Sebastian’s orders.
Grudgingly, Zayden pulled out a document. “Fine. Then have her sign this first. This treatment is Miller’s Acupuncture, created by Catherine Miller herself – it must never be leaked to anyone!”
Noah’s brow twitched. Seriously? At a time like this, you’re worried about paperwork?
But Zayden only handed him the agreement before turning back to his patient, already unbuttoning Sebastian’s shirt to begin treatment.
Serena, curious to see what he’d do, didn’t even glance at the document before signing. With her right hand still trapped in Sebastian’s grip, she used her left to scrawl her name.
Before leaving the room, Noah gave her a strict warning. “Ms. Serena, just hold Mr. Hayes’s hand. Don’t do anything else!”

She nodded. “Mm, I won’t move.”

Zayden’s tool was a magnetic acupuncture device a type of microcurrent therapy. In theory. it could combine the effects of acupuncture and herbal heat treatments, but in practice it was far from the real thing, just a safer, simpler imitation.
“Do you even understand what you’re looking at?” Zayden asked with a sneer.
In his eyes, every woman who came near Sebastian had an ulterior motive both.
-money, looks, or
For someone to suddenly appear when Sebastian was at death’s door, and happen to be the only one he wasn’t allergic to? Obviously suspicious.
“A bit,” Serena said evenly.
She’d already recognized his needle sequence as belonging to the Blackgate Meridian. The famed Blackgate Acupuncture’s pinnacle technique was Novan Lane’s Nine–Needle Revival. This variation was more elaborate twenty–seven needles in a set sequence – but still firmly
within the Blackgate school.
“Who did you say invented this technique?” she asked.
“Catherine Miller, the most gifted heir of the Miller family, a dynasty in alternative medicine!” Zayden’s pride was written all over his face. Catherine’s talents extended far beyond medicine; any one of her secret identities could inspire awe. A genius like her was once in a lifetime.
