Who was scheming against who?
Mica’s face turned stiff with embarrassment, while Kelly looked so mortified her eyes welled up with tears.
Madam Dorothy’s tone turned sour. “If we’re really family, and Nathan needs the Serenity Blend herbal formula, then you should be giving it to him for free. Forcing them to buy it like this—some big brother you are!”
Serena frowned. She really didn’t like this grandmother.
Arbor, long used to this blatant favoritism, remained calm. “I know all about the Serenity Blend. That formula was something Olivia begged from a master back when Lebron was poisoned and couldn’t sleep for years. It was never ours to begin with. What right do we have to sell it?”
Once a formula like that goes commercial, what happens if the master also wants to make a living from it? That would be stealing someone’s livelihood—biting the hand that once helped them.
That kind of betrayal wasn’t something they could live with.
Even the limited incense Olivia sells online gives sixty percent of profits back to the master.
“But Nathan is your brother!” Madam Dorothy was so angry she started coughing. Arbor frowned but said nothing.
Kelly gripped her hand tightly, trying to soothe her. If she couldn’t secure the Serenity Blend formula, how would the Fern family see her? Worse, they were already looking for other suppliers. She couldn’t afford to lose this deal.
“Aunt Olivia, could you talk to the source? We’re willing to pay, no matter how much!”
Mica wasn’t having it. Master, master, she thought scornfully. “You know our family’s situation. At most, we can put up three million dollars.”
She said it like the ball was in their court.
The room fell so silent you could hear a pin drop.
Kelly gave her mom’s sleeve a tug. The Fern family had been ready to invest eight million—offering five million wouldn’t have hurt.
Mica, of course, knew that. But she didn’t want to hand the main branch a windfall. Still, she didn’t want to close the door completely, so she added, “Three million might not sound like a lot, but at least it gives you a decent shot at GoldCure. That’s something, right?”
Her gears turning, Mica shifted tactics again. “You all know Hayes Corp, right? Kelly’s about to become Mr. Jackson’s student. If she performs well, it’s not impossible for Hayes Corp to offer some help.”
“Hayes Corp is powerful—in Ardenos and all of Clovencia. If we can open that door, you might not even need to fight for GoldCure. You’ll get as much as you want…”
“No,” Serena cut in.
“What?”
As Arbor and Olivia turned back, they caught sight of the desperate mother and daughter—and it left them cold.
Once the main branch had left, Mica muttered, “They’re just playing hard to get so they can raise the price. And you were about to hand it to them on a silver platter.”
“But what if they really don’t want to sell it?” Kelly asked, worried.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Mica said, full of herself. “How are they going to afford GoldCure? That stuff costs a fortune!”
So you’ll push Olivia into selling the herbal formula by using GoldCure as leverage? Wendy couldn’t listen anymore. She stood and said, “I’ll go see Arbor’s family off.”
As soon as the door closed, Madam Dorothy hurled a teacup and shouted, “Ungrateful bastards!”
Wendy shook her head and caught up to Arbor and the others. She couldn’t help but advise gently, “If you can’t sell the formula, then don’t. But don’t let this ruin the family.”
Arbor nodded.
As she helped them into the car, Serena rolled down the window and said softly, “Don’t throw away the candy.”
