Rowan caved instantly. “Probably.”
Patrick looked like he was about to explode. “I might be a thug, but I don’t pick on girls. This was an accident. I’ll take responsibility.”
Serena tilted her head. “So when you and your buddies jumped me with a dozen guys, what did you take me for?”
Patrick bristled. “You don’t count as a girl. That’s not the same thing!”
Serena paused. “Sounds to me like you haven’t done enough Kaplan’s SAT Prep Plus. You’re getting cocky.”
Patrick was speechless.
Rowan was terrified they’d throw down right there. “It’s my fault. Please don’t fight. Everyone’s watching and laughing at us!”
Serena calmed herself and knelt down to gently press Rowan’s ankle. Ligament strain. It needed rest.
“Until Rowan’s better, you’re in charge of taking her to and from school.”
Patrick rolled his eyes. “Gee, thanks. Still don’t get what she sees in you.”
What he didn’t say was that Rowan, in tears and desperation, had pulled a knife on them, threatening to kill herself if they didn’t let her go. Even a seasoned brawler like him had panicked.
Rowan suddenly smiled. “Serena, you don’t usually talk this much.”
Her stunning desk mate had actually gotten into a shouting match with a guy for her. She felt so lucky.
The sincerity in Rowan’s eyes burned like pure sunlight. It made Patrick wince. He hadn’t seen anything that pure in a long time. When someone genuinely cared about another person, it was a kind of beauty that could be addictive.
As soon as Serena stepped through the school gate, someone from the main office came to get her.
“You’re out here saving the world. Don’t worry about me!” Rowan waved her tiny fist to cheer her on.
Her beautiful desk mate was about to lead Horizon Research Institute’s Advanced Research Team into glory. Maybe she’d even become a famous scientist one day. She was so proud.
Serena nodded, then shot a warning glance at Patrick.
Patrick scowled and wheeled Rowan away.
When Serena arrived at the main office, the rest of the team was already there.
Quartz rubbed his shiny bald head. “Serena, your essays are done.”
Each of the genius overachievers walked out of the main office with a face like storm clouds.
When asked about the sappy essays posted online, they looked like they wanted to slam their heads into the wall.
Even Taylor, who hadn’t had a low blood sugar episode in two days, felt it coming on again.
By noon, the school officially announced the establishment of Evervale City’s Horizon Research Institute’s Advanced Research Team. Serena’s name was listed first. Taylor was listed as the supervising advisor.
The announcement also detailed a series of privileges: those who passed Horizon Research Institute’s final selection would be personally recommended by a staff researcher to Howerton University, Kingsford University, Regency University, or even a top 10 university globally.
The entire campus erupted.
No one had expected a citywide mock exam to turn out to be part of a national test with such far-reaching consequences.
“If I’d known, I’d have actually studied! Maybe I could’ve made the list.”
“All ten spots in Evervale City went to Haven High School. That’s insane!”
At the milk tea shop near Haven High School, Serena sat in front of a dozen cups of milk tea, all different flavors.
