Chapter 244

Luna Demetra.

Contd.

“Luna, look at me… are you alright?”

“Yeah. Yes, I’m fine.” I exhale and press myself back against the leather seat, placing my hand flat against my belly.

“Can you be more careful.” I hear Tyson say to the driver and his voice does something different when it carries an edge. It sounds like the rumble of an engine, oily and silky and gruff simultaneously, the kind of voice that makes a request sound like the final version of a conversation.

“Sorry Alpha, Luna… didn’t see the pothole.”

“I’m alright.” I say again. “It’s fine.”

I turn to look out the window, ready to let the moment fade when I see a cotton candy stand.

The stand is glowing under the string lights, spinning clouds of pink and blue and white. My heart literally reaches for it like I’ve never seen cotton candy before in my life. I forget I almost got flipped upside down. I forget the hockey game, the wedding…all I can see is the bright, fluffy candy spinning on the stick.

My stomach whines. With Amira I craved every sweet thing in existence for nine months and apparently this pup has inherited that preference. My baby wants it too.

I hear the engine start again, and I quickly speak-

“Um, don’t. Can you just park somewhere there?” I point at the stalls. “I want a cotton candy.”

The car slows, then stops. All of a sudden, I remember Alpha Tyson is sitting beside me and feel mildly embarrassed about announcing a cotton candy craving to a world-renowned boxing Alpha.

I hear him get out onto the pavement, and he rounds the car to get to me.

I step out.

“That one?” He points at the stall.

“Yeah.”

We walk past the crowd, weaving through groups of people. We’re close to the ice-skating rink arena where the game is going on. These stalls are open because of all the people here for the game. Lanterns are strung overhead casting everything in warm gold light. It’s a genuinely beautiful night and I pick the slightly blue cotton candy.

Alpha Tyson pays before I can.

I text Tiffany quickly so no one worries why we’re not in VIP seats: I’m in the area. Stopped for cotton candy, don’t worry.

The moment I put the candy on my lips, it melts. The world bursts into colors. I feel my hormones just collect it, like yes, craving satisfied. My eyes are shut as I savour it, and I don’t realize Alpha Tyson is looking at

I open my eyes and he’s looking at me with amusement.

“Wow.”

“I promise I’m not weird. It’s a pregnancy craving.” I laugh, turning around so we can walk away from the stalls as kids swarm around it.

“You’re pregnant?”

“Yes.” I face him as I say it, still working through the cotton candy.

“Sure Emris is gonna be okay?” Alpha Tyson looks at me. “I mean, he’s always been protective…more so possessive, like every other wolf. But I assume it’s gonna be heightened with a pregnant mate.”

“Possibly.” I shrug. “But it doesn’t matter.” I pause, looking around at the glowing lanterns. “You know what? It’s such a beautiful night. I don’t mind us walking… and talking.”

“Sure.” Alpha Tyson takes off his jacket from his shoulders and immediately places it on mine mid-step, pausing just long enough to settle it properly before we keep walking.

It’s warm immediately.

“Do you have a wife?” I ask.

“No.”

“Why not?” I say, keeping my eyes on the lanterns floating up into the sky. “I can’t imagine that a famous Alpha like you doesn’t have she-wolves flocking around.”

We walk along the side of the crosswalk, and I feel myself breathing easier. I needed this. I genuinely needed exactly this. Fresh air and a beautiful night and a conversation that has nothing to do with Laura or pack matters or any of the things that’s literally a roadblock.

“It’s trickier than that.” Tyson says easily. “I’m sure you already know that. Not every bond is a good bond and it’s better to wait for the right one than get pressured into something by elders or media. Besides, being a single Alpha has its charm.”

“Oh wow.” I laugh, and we chuckle alongside each other.

Alpha Tyson switches…to the closer side of the sidewalk where cars are moving without making a thing of it, just repositioning so he’s between me and the road like a thoughtful gentlewolf.

“Well, I hope you find the right one.” I smile at him. “I’m rooting for you, Alpha Tyson. Well, except you wanna keep the bachelor status and even then, I’m gonna root for you.”

I keep my eyes on the walkway, still smiling, when all of a sudden Laura appears and stands in my path.

“Where’s Emris!?” She asks.

The smile on my face dissolves so fast it’s like it was never there. Before I can do something about it-

“Who are you?” Alpha Tyson asks.

“Wasn’t talking to you-”

“But you are talking to a Luna.” He holds his ground so undaunted that I can literally sense something about his wolf.

Laura rolls her eyes and lands them on him again. “Are you her new bodyguard? First it was Lake, then Monroe… and now… whoever this is?” She looks him up and down. “He looks like he works those arms out, but looks can be very deceiving.”

“Do you know her?” Tyson murmurs quietly to me.

“No.” I say immediately.

He looks back at Laura. “Apologize. Right here, right now, for disrespecting a Luna. And I’ll let you off scot- free.”

I stare at him, forgetting to enjoy my cotton candy at this point because the sound of his voice feels like a threat. I’m suddenly very aware that I don’t actually know what Alpha Tyson of the Weight Pack is capable of. I look left and right hoping someone I recognize walks into this scene quickly.

Laura is a Trybrid. I don’t want to get him in trouble with her.

“And if I don’t?” Laura comes closer, bold as a goat. “What the hell are you gonna do if I don’t apologize?”

At first, Alpha Tyson doesn’t say anything back. He just glances at her. I exhale, because I really don’t want to intervene, but there’s no one else to put her in her place. So I’m just gonna have to diffuse the situation and tell him I know her.

“Alpha Tyson, can we just—”

Instead, I see him walk closer toward Laura.

“Alpha?” Laura asks, and that’s the only thing that comes out of her mouth before he picks her up by the neck in the space of a single blink and throws her.

I don’t see where Laura lands. She’s… simply no longer in front of us and then I hear screaming from somewhere far to my left and people gathering near the roller coasters.

Is…is that where she landed.

The cotton candy goes down from my hand, and the only question at the roof of my mouth is: What exactly is the Alpha from the Weight Pack? He takes out a handkerchief rom his pocket and wipes his hand with it.
