"Hey," Joyce said, studying her friend's face. "Rebecca, you look happy. What's going on?"
As far as she knew, Caroline's return had affected both Sherilyn and Rebecca.
Rebecca paused, then shook her head. "It's not exactly happy news, but let's just say things have gotten a little better for now."
She then told them about Caroline being sent to the sanatorium. When she finished, she and Joyce exchanged a look before they both turned to Sherilyn.
Sherilyn chuckled. "Why are you both looking at me like that?"
"Sherilyn..." Rebecca sighed. "If he had done this sooner, maybe you and Mr. Harrison..."
She didn't finish the sentence, but all three of them knew what she meant. Maybe they wouldn't have broken up.
Sherilyn just smiled and shook her head. "Let's not talk about 'what ifs.' It's pointless. I'm doing just fine now, aren't I?"
Besides, she didn't believe that Francis acting sooner would have changed anything. As she had told Gilbert, it had been years, and in her view, as long as Caroline was around, she would never leave them in peace. Hadn't they been through this before? Years ago, she had naively thought that marrying Gilbert would make her the most important person in his life. More recently, when Caroline was sent to another city, she thought she could finally have some peace. But Caroline had always come roaring back.
So, even with Caroline now in a sanatorium, she was still out there. And as long as she was, she would forever be a shadow over the Johnson brothers.
But Sherilyn couldn't say this to Rebecca. She couldn't just advise her to break up with Francis based on her own cynical predictions. Besides, her situation with Rebecca wasn't exactly the same. All she could do was hope that Rebecca would have better luck than she did.
