"Joyce?" Sherilyn exclaimed upon entering the law firm and seeing her friend right outside Nanson's office.
"Sherilyn?" Joyce was just as surprised, but her face quickly broke into a smile. "My cousin asked you to come?"
"He did," Sherilyn replied with a nod. "I need to sign some papers."
"Let's go in together." Joyce linked her arm through Sherilyn's and pushed the door open, chattering away. "I was out shopping with my mom, and she's getting her hair done now. I was so bored waiting, and I happened to buy my cousin a new tie, so I dropped by to give it to him and get him to buy us lunch."
"Sounds like a good plan," Sherilyn chuckled.
"Trying to get a free meal out of me again?" Nanson greeted them with a grin as they walked in. He held out his hand. "Let me see the tie. If I don't like it, I'm not buying you lunch."
"Is that so?" Joyce raised an eyebrow, unfazed. "Go ahead and tell your aunt that. See what she says."
His aunt, of course, was Joyce's mother.
"You're impossible!" Nanson laughed, shaking his head. He took the tie, tossed it on his desk, and then gestured for Sherilyn to have a seat. "Sherilyn, please sit. Don't mind her, she's just here to freeload. We have actual business to discuss."
Joyce stuck her tongue out at her cousin playfully.
"Alright." Sherilyn, amused, sat down as directed.
"Here, take a look at these..." Nanson retrieved a stack of documents from a cabinet and spread them out in front of Sherilyn. "Everything's been taken care of. It's all here. Once you've reviewed them and everything looks okay, you just need to sign."
"Okay." Sherilyn opened the first file.
Nanson sat across from her and pulled open a side drawer, taking out a small box of chewing gum.
"Hey!" Joyce's sharp eyes caught him. "What are you eating? Don't hold out on us, Sherilyn and I are right here."
"Holding out?" Nanson reached over and lightly tapped Joyce on the head. "It's just gum. Want some?"
"Is there a problem with that?" Nanson chuckled. "Smoking is bad for your health, isn't it? Weren't you the one who told me that?"
"Yes, but..."
"Nanson..." Sherilyn, who had been focused on the documents, suddenly looked up and raised her hand. "Excuse me, I don't quite understand this part."
"Which part?" Nanson responded immediately, walking over to her side. "Let me see. Oh, this section... It means..." He began to explain patiently and meticulously.
Joyce watched them quietly, a thoughtful expression on her face. This scene... Could it be? No, surely not.
Meanwhile, Sherilyn finished reviewing the documents and signed each one.
"Nanson, thank you for everything. I'll be counting on you from now on."
