Whispers Turn to Whimpers: Could He Ever Change? novel Chapter 1259

Galen held his phone, his voice warm. "I just left my sister's place. Yeah... I had dinner there tonight... You're off work? Okay, I'll see you in a bit."

After hanging up, he turned to Sherilyn. "Sis."

Sherilyn smiled. "Meeting up with Joyce?"

"Yeah," Galen nodded, a bit sheepishly. "She just got off work. We're meeting at her apartment."

"Then you should get going. Don't keep her waiting."

"Sis..." Galen hesitated, looking a bit embarrassed. "Joyce hasn't eaten yet. Would it be okay if I took some food from here?"

Ordering takeout was an option, but it was often greasy and salty, not to mention full of processed ingredients that were hard to avoid. A home-cooked meal was always better.

"Of course!" Sherilyn readily agreed. "Come on back in."

They went back inside, and Sherilyn started packing food into containers for him.

"The beef is perfect. We have some frozen portions that were just made this afternoon. You can just heat it up. And these pies... Joyce likes the pork ones." Then she pulled out some washed and prepped vegetables. "These are all ready to go."

She paused and asked Galen, "Do you know how to cook?"

"Sis, don't underestimate your little brother," Galen laughed. "Every international student ends up becoming a master chef, right?" After going abroad, he realized he couldn't stand the local food. When the cravings for home-cooked meals became unbearable, he had to learn to make them himself. "Don't worry, I know how."

"Good." Sherilyn smiled, placing the containers in a large bag with an ice pack. "Now hurry up, don't let Joyce get too hungry."

"I know. Thanks, sis."

"Aren't you tired?" Joyce asked, smiling. They had both had long days. "And you're still cooking for me?"

"Me?" Galen turned to look at her, shaking his head. "My day was nothing compared to yours. I just sat in an air-conditioned office. It was comfortable." He urged her again, "Go take a shower."

"Okay..." Joyce agreed but lingered, watching him. He was younger than her, but he always took care of her as if it were the most natural thing in the world. As Sherilyn had said, she had no idea how his parents had managed to raise such a considerate son.

"Joyce?" Galen looked at her, confused. "What's wrong? Not going to shower?"

"I'm going, I'm going!" Joyce's eyes curved into crescents as she smiled and disappeared into the bathroom.

When she emerged from her shower, feeling refreshed, she sat down at the table. Galen immediately served dinner.
