Whispers Turn to Whimpers: Could He Ever Change? novel Chapter 1262

Was it really such a coincidence? A problem that had seemed so difficult was suddenly solved with such ease? Or was there… more to it? She was probably just overthinking things.

That afternoon, Charles entered the CEO's office carrying a stack of files. "Mr. Gilbert."

"Hm," Gilbert acknowledged him. "Just put them down."

"Yes, sir." Charles set the files on the desk. He had another reason for being there. "Regarding the cemetery plot, Wind Bridge called. They said Galen has already handled it, so our help is no longer needed."

Gilbert froze, looking up with a frown. "He handled it?"

"Yes," Charles confirmed. "That's what they said."

"How?" Gilbert pressed.

"Well…" Charles shook his head. "I'm not sure of the details, but it's entirely possible Galen could resolve it through his own connections. It's not an impossible task."

Wasn't it? Gilbert fell silent. He waved a hand at Charles. "I see. You can go now."

"Yes, Mr. Gilbert."

Feeling a flicker of irritation, Gilbert leaned back in his chair. The problem was solved, so why did he feel so unsettled? After a moment of contemplation, he picked up his phone and dialed Francis's number. "Brother Francis, it's me."

The day before the reburial, Sherilyn took Jenna to the hospital for a follow-up appointment. Just as they were about to leave, she received a call from Gilbert.

"Hello?" Sherilyn answered. "Brother Gilbert."

On the other end, a bitter taste filled Gilbert's mouth. The title rolled off her tongue so smoothly now. "Jenna has her check-up today," he stated, his lips barely moving.

"What is it?" Sherilyn prompted after a moment of silence. "Just say it."

"I just…" Gilbert gripped his phone tighter. "I just wanted to ask… how Jenna is doing."

"Oh." Sherilyn understood. He was worried about his daughter. "Her mood is better than it was a few days ago, and she's physically fine. No sickness, so don't worry."

"I see…" Gilbert murmured. "That's good."

"I have to go now. I need to get Jenna from upstairs."

"Okay."

After the call ended, Gilbert clutched his phone as if it were Sherilyn herself. He sat quietly in his car, waiting. A short while later, he saw the gate to her house open and her car slowly pull out. He instinctively sat up straighter, his back rigid, his eyes fixed on the vehicle, hoping for a glimpse, but just like before, he only saw the back of the car as it drove away.
