"Brother Francis?" Sherilyn was taken aback. "Why would you say that?"
"You and Gilbert…" Francis sighed deeply. "It's my fault you two are in this situation."
"No, it's not," Sherilyn quickly interrupted. "Brother Francis, please don't say that. Our separation had nothing to do with you." She wasn't so unreasonable as to misplace blame.
"Even if it wasn't you directly," she continued, her logic clear, "Caroline would still be his savior. That's a fact, and that's the real reason he can't let her go. This was my choice. So, brother Francis… please don't blame yourself, and you don't need to apologize to me."
"I still do," Francis insisted. "For those four years you were in Crestwood… I knew nothing."
"That has even less to do with you," Sherilyn said, taken aback. During those four years, Francis had been in a coma, unable to help even if he had wanted to. "It's all in the past. Let's not talk about it anymore."
"Alright," Francis agreed, sighing to himself. His brother had been right about one thing: Sherilyn and Caroline were polar opposites. Sherilyn was direct and spoke her mind, a trait that had earned her a reputation for being spoiled and arrogant in her youth. In contrast, the quiet Caroline always seemed like the one who was being wronged. Only after many years did the truth come to light. The impulsive, brash Sherilyn possessed an incredibly kind and gentle heart. Time truly does reveal a person's true character.
"Sherilyn," Francis said, his tone shifting. "I called you today about something else… Why didn't you tell me you were arranging to have your grandparents and mother moved?"
Sherilyn paused, her lips slightly parted. "Oh, that…" She hadn't mentioned it because she hadn't thought to. But Rebecca White knew. "Did Rebecca tell you?"
"Yes," Francis replied smoothly, going along with her assumption. "The fact that I had to hear it from her just shows what an incompetent brother I am."
"No, that's not it at all…" Sherilyn felt a little awkward. "I just… it didn't seem like it concerned you." As soon as the words left her mouth, she regretted them. "Brother Francis, I didn't mean it like that…" She didn't want to push him away. Truthfully, for a brother with no blood relation, Francis had been more than good to her.
