"It's no trouble."
Nanson smiled and took Jenna into his arms. Sherilyn stepped forward with a blanket and draped it over the child. With one arm supporting Jenna, Nanson used his other to adjust the blanket, wrapping her snugly but leaving her face uncovered so she could breathe easily.
"Nanson," Sherilyn observed, the words slipping out, "you're very good with children."
"Of course," he replied with a nod. "Taking care of kids is hard work. It should be a man's job." He glanced at her, his eyes holding a subtle hint of sympathy. "It must be incredibly difficult for you, raising a child on your own. Mothers are truly amazing."
Sherilyn thought of his own daughter and assumed he must be missing her. "Your daughter isn't with you. You must worry about her a lot."
"I do," Nanson admitted with a soft sigh. "But she's older now and knows how to take care of herself."
They continued walking and talking as they made their way up the hill. Gilbert trailed behind them, watching silently. At first, his feelings were a complicated mix, but they slowly curdled into something else. Watching them chat and laugh so easily, with Jenna sleeping peacefully in Nanson's arms, anyone would think they were a family. Soon, all he felt was a bitter, sour ache. This Nanson… was he really just Joyce's cousin?
…
Nanson's hold was steady, and Jenna remained asleep all the way to the top of the hill. The Martin family had already arrived.
"Sis," Galen said, walking over to their group. "It's about time. You should prepare to pay your respects." As they had agreed, Sherilyn would be the one to make the first offering.
"Okay." Sherilyn followed Galen to the front of the grave. The moment she saw the names of her grandfather and mother on the headstone, tears welled up in her eyes. "Grandpa, Mom… I'm here to bring you home, to reunite you with Grandma."
