"You want the juice? Go ahead, take it."
"But you…" Sherilyn hesitated. It was the last one. She knew he had given up coffee for a while because of his medication. Should she give it to him? But Nanson had specifically asked for juice.
"Thanks, then." After a brief consideration, Sherilyn picked up the juice carton. "There's still some soy milk. You can have that."
"Right, okay." Gilbert looked momentarily stunned, then nodded.
Sherilyn offered him a small smile before turning and walking away. Gilbert frowned, but ultimately couldn't resist. He quietly followed her.
…
"Nanson," Sherilyn said, returning to his side. "I brought your food. Here you go." She unwrapped the sandwich, holding it by a corner and offering it to him. "Can you manage?"
"Yes, no problem." Nanson took it with one hand, his other still securely supporting Jenna.
Outside, Gilbert watched everything through the window. He saw Sherilyn open the juice, stick a straw in it, but not for herself. She placed it within Nanson's reach.
"Nanson, here's your juice."
"Great, thank you."
Gilbert's scalp tightened, his eyes widening. So, Sherilyn had wanted the juice for Nanson!
Inside, Sherilyn remembered what Joyce had told her. She chose her words carefully and said in a low voice, "About the cemetery plot… thank you."
"Then don't be a stranger." He gestured toward the drink. "Sherilyn, could you pass me the juice?"
"Of course, here." She handed it to him.
Nanson took it, thinking to himself that they had known each other in spirit for a long time. Beyond her striking appearance, what truly drew him to Sherilyn was her resilience—that unyielding, vibrant spirit she exuded no matter the hardship. It was both dazzling and warm.
Outside, Gilbert abruptly turned away and walked off. It was Nanson! Not Galen, but Nanson! His feeling of unease had been right all along! Nanson had been the one to handle the cemetery plot.
This Nanson wasn't just Joyce's cousin. He was a man actively trying to enter Sherilyn's world. His worries weren't unfounded. They were coming true, and so quickly.
With someone else by her side, would Sherilyn ever need him again? Was he about to lose even this small chance to watch over her from the shadows?
