Galen was stunned, his face instantly darkening. He instinctively glanced at Joyce; he couldn't believe his mother would expose this side of herself so suddenly, right in front of her.
"Mom!" Galen hurried forward and grabbed Malvina's wrist. "Stop talking nonsense! My feelings for Joyce are my own business! It has nothing to do with my sister!" He tried to pull her away, casting a pleading look at his father. "Dad, please take Mom outside."
"Now, wait a…"
"Take me where? I'm not going anywhere!" Malvina thrashed, growing more agitated. "Galen, you're being a fool, but I'm not! Now that I've exposed this scheme, we're going to clear the air right here, right now!"
She then turned her fury on Joyce, her voice shrill. "Hey! You! Joyce or whatever your name is! Say something! Cat got your tongue? What did Sherilyn offer you to come here and ruin my son?"
Joyce was speechless, frozen in place with shock, her back ramrod straight. She had been raised with love and affection her whole life and had never been subjected to such vicious accusations.
"Mom!" Galen was losing his patience, tightening his grip on Malvina. "Stop making a scene! Joyce just returned to the country a short while ago! How could this be some scheme of Sherilyn's? Do you think everyone is as manipulative as you?"
"As me?" Malvina stared at her son in disbelief. "How dare you speak to me like that? And you still say it's not her scheme? You're my son, yet you're defending outsiders at every turn!"
"Mom…" Galen's brow was knitted so tightly it looked like a knot. He knew what his mother was like, but he never imagined she would turn on him this way.
He glanced at Joyce and saw her wringing her hands anxiously, her small face pale as a sheet. "You're coming with me!" he said, his resolve hardening. He grabbed Malvina and began pulling her toward the exit. "Now!"
…
"What's going on?" In the adjacent lounge, Sherilyn vaguely heard the commotion and stood up, puzzled.
"You…" Malvina was about to say more when she looked up and saw Sherilyn. "Ha! The mastermind arrives! Perfect! Let's have a confrontation! You've got some nerve, using a honey trap on my son!"
She was just getting warmed up. "So, tell me! What's your game? Are you trying to swindle the entire Martin family?"
Sherilyn's brow furrowed instantly. It only took a few sentences for her to understand what was happening—Malvina had found out about Galen and Joyce.
With a faint, cold smile, Sherilyn looked at Galen. For her brother's sake, she reined in her temper. "Malvina, if you care about Galen at all, you'll stop this now."
"Care about Galen? Ha!" The words only seemed to fuel Malvina's frenzy. She glared at Sherilyn, her eyes practically bulging. "You have the audacity to say that? When have you ever cared about him? You've been using him this whole time, making him dote on you!"
