Sherilyn's brow tightened. She couldn't refute that. She had to admit that between her and Galen, she had always been the one receiving his care and support.
"I don't care what you think of me," she said coolly. "But Joyce is the woman Galen likes…"
For her brother's sake, Sherilyn patiently tried to explain. "Joyce only recently returned to the country, long after Jenna's surgery was over. The day she came back, I was too busy to pick her up from the airport, so I asked Galen to go… They developed feelings for each other. It's genuine."
"The airport? You sent him to the airport? Ha! Hahaha…" Malvina seized on this as if it were irrefutable proof. "You admit it! This was your plan all along!"
Sherilyn and Galen exchanged a look of disbelief.
"Oh, Galen!" Malvina cried, grabbing her son's arm anxiously. "She did it on purpose! She sent you to the airport so this woman could seduce you!"
"Mom!" Galen couldn't listen anymore, shaking his head with a cold, bitter laugh. "Do you really think your son is such a prize? Joyce, seducing me? Am I even worthy?"
He continued, his voice laced with sarcasm, "Do you have any idea how incredible Joyce is? She has a medical doctorate from Penn and comes from a family like the Coopers. Seduce me? Please! All she has to do is stand still, and there'd be a line of eligible bachelors in Sunhaven hoping to win her favor."
"A medical doctorate?" Malvina repeated, her focus shifting strangely. "That girl is a doctor?"
"Yes…" Galen said, nodding, momentarily taken aback. He glanced at Sherilyn, thinking his words had finally gotten through.
Sherilyn thought so too.
"Oh my god!" Malvina exclaimed, but her next question was completely unexpected. "Then how old is she? If she's already a doctor, she must be pretty old, right?"
Joyce just stared back at him, her already pale face now completely drained of color.
"Mom!" Galen's heart ached for her. He grabbed Malvina's wrist. "If you don't stop this right now, you can forget about paying respects to Grandma and Grandpa. I'll have someone send you home this instant!"
"You wouldn't dare!" Malvina challenged, jutting out her chin.
"Try me."
Faced with her son's unwavering resolve, Malvina finally fell silent. She knew he had grown up and was making his own decisions now, both in the family and in business. He rarely listened to her anymore. After all, she hadn't been able to stop his friendship with Sherilyn, had she? She knew he meant what he said.
"Let's go!" Galen said, forcibly leading Malvina away.
