In the Astralis Empire, within the residence of Thunderbolt Pack, the Reeds sat facing a young man in stunned silence.

Alpha Edric Reed and Luna Cassidy Hartley exchanged a look, then turned back to him.

“Oliver,” Edric said, wanting to make sure he had heard correctly, “are you serious? You truly want to form an alliance with the Reeds and take Shirley as your mate?”

Oliver smiled modestly. “I’ve actually wanted to bring this up to you both for a long time. But Shirley was still too young before, so I waited until now. She’ll be turning 20 soon, and although she’s still training at the military academy, it would be good for her and for both our families to start discussing this now.”

Edric hesitated before speaking again. “Oliver, I watched you grow up. You’ve become an exceptional man, and I have every confidence in you. I’m only afraid Shirley would be the one burdening you.”

He let out a quiet sigh. “Ever since she was little, she’s caused one mess after another, and every time, you were the one cleaning up after her. She’s stubborn. She doesn’t even listen to her own parents, yet she’s always trusted you. If Shirley could become your mate and have you looking after her, Cassidy and I would naturally be happy. It’s just her condition. I’m afraid it would bring you a great deal of trouble.”

Edric had always assumed Oliver saw Shirley as nothing more than a younger sister. He had never imagined the boy had long since fallen for her.

The Redwood Pack and Thunderbolt Pack had always been close, and both the Reeds and the Caldwells had long followed the political path, which made the ties between their families even stronger. If Shirley was willing, this match couldn’t have been more suitable.

In fact, if Oliver hadn’t spent years quietly cleaning up Shirley’s disasters, she probably would have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Astralis Empire by now instead of living as freely and fearlessly as she did.

The Reeds felt nothing but gratitude and approval toward Oliver.

Oliver inclined his head politely. “Please don’t worry, Mr. Reed. Shirley and I grew up together. I know everything about her. Most of the time, I’ve been the one dealing with the aftermath of her trouble, so you don’t need to worry that her condition will become a burden to me.”

As he spoke, his expression dimmed slightly. “When I was younger, I didn’t understand my own feelings. I thought what I felt for Shirley was only the affection of an older brother, It wasn’t until later that I realized I had already fallen in love with her. And it was because of Shirley that I gave up my bad habits and gradually became more steady and mature,”

Cassidy was deeply moved by his words, and even Edric seemed affected.

A trace of certainty flashed through Oliver’s eyes as he continued, “Perhaps Shirley really is my lucky star. Just yesterday, Astralis issued my new appointment. I’ve been promoted again, By the time Shirley graduates from the military academy, I want to be able to give her a stable and secure future.”

Edric and Cassidy looked at each other in shock, Oliver had already been on the same level as Edric before. As the youngest member of Astralis’s parliament, his ability had never been in doubt. And now he had risen another rank, putting him above Edric altogether.

Chapter 542 The Marriage Proposal

For people in politics, once they reached their level, moving higher was nearly impossible. Edric had spent his entire life climbing to where he was now, yet Oliver, still only in his 20s, had already reached a position of real power. What more could they possibly ask for?

On top of that, Oliver and Shirley had grown up together. For years, he had helped her sincerely and rescued the Reeds more than once. The family already owed him more than they could say. Now he had even straightened out his life completely for Shirley. Young, accomplished, devoted, and capable, he wasn’t the one reaching above his station.

If anything, Shirley was the lucky one. To know that someone like this truly cared for their daughter filled them with relief.

Edric cleared his throat. “Cassidy and I both have no objections. But in the end, we still have to wait until Shirley comes back and hear what she wants.”

Oliver smiled with perfect sincerity, though a faint, almost invisible confidence remained in his eyes.

“That’s fine, Mr. Reed. Our families can first come to an understanding about the engagement. When Shirley returns, I’ll tell her my feelings myself. I’m sure she’ll understand.”

Edric considered it for a moment, then nodded. “Alright. We’ll settle the intention first and wait for Shirley to come back before making the final decision.”

When Oliver walked out of the Reed residence, he felt lighter than he had in days. The weight pressing on his chest had finally lifted.

The last time Ryan and Darius mentioned that someone at the military academy had been openly pursuing Shirley, alarm bells had gone off in his head at once.

He had always assumed that Shirley, who relied on him and trusted him so completely, would belong to him sooner or later.

What he had forgotten was that Shirley was simple-hearted, and when she wasn’t in one of her violent episodes, she was especially lovable. That kind of sweetness attracted attention all too easily, especially from people with ulterior motives.

That was why he had decided to act first. He had gone straight to the Reeds to win their approval and secure an intention of engagement before anyone else could get close.

He knew Edric and Cassidy too well. And after all these years of sincerely protecting Shirley and helping the Reeds out of trouble, earning their approval had never been the hard part.

Now all that remained was to wait for Shirley to return from the military academy, confess his feelings properly, win her over little by little, and make the engagement official.
