CHAPTER 23

Amelia

Why am I even surprised at all? Of course, Logan hasn’t changed one bit. He’s still the same short-tempered, domineering, and suffocatingly possessive man I’ve known all my life.

Deep down, I hoped that he would arrive at Deadfang and show some change. He was supposed to come here to discuss a peace agreement, not show off his inability to control his temper.

I want to look away, but I force myself to keep eye contact as I speak, “I’m not returning back to that pack ever. My decision is final, even if it means I die as a rogue wolf, I’m still not going back there with you.”

My voice is surprisingly firm and calm, which only should prove to Logan that I’m not playing his twisted games.

Can’t he see it for himself? I’ve been a part of Deadfang for literal days and I’ve already changed for the better. I’m more assertive, I speak up, and for once, I’ve enjoyed how it feels to be dolled up.

This pack is bringing positive changes to my life and I’m not willing to let go of that just because of Logan’s inability to admit defeat. He wants me back to show everyone he still has power over me, not because he wants what’s best for me.

We both know what would happen if I return – I’d be stuck in the same position I’ve been in my entire life. But honestly, after I got the taste of how it feels to be seen, cared for and respected by my pack members, I don’t want to return to being overlooked or sneered at all the time.

Logan sneers at me, further proving my point. “Careful, Amelia, you don’t know what you’re risking by talking back to me. If you don’t come back of your free will, you’ll force my hand to send warriors and drag you back. If war is what you want, I can give you one you’ll never forget.” He threatens.

What did I ever see in him? It feels like today, I’m finally facing the man he truly is, not the illusion my mind conjured up every time I excused his behavior.

“Careful, he’s more pissed than ever, Logan is unpredictable now,” my wolf mutters the warning.

I don’t look away from Logan, my gaze locked with his. “Remeber how Logan kept claiming I’m nothing but Katherine’s replacement? A cheap copy, is what I believe he said?” I mutter to my wolf.

“Yeah, he said that and many other things, I do recall,” she agrees.

“That’s the point, the words and actions don’t align. Something’s off. One moment I’m worthless and the next, he’s standing in an enemy territory, threatening war if I don’t give in and follow him back to that hell hole. I just don’t understand him at all.” I explain to her.

My wolf starts muttering something about hidden agendas. She’s weirdly obsessed with crime documentaries, so of course she guesses that Katherine needs an organ or blood, and that’s why Logan is so desperate to drag me back.

But then again, he knows how I am – no matter how hurt or angry I might be, I’d still consider helping. As cruel and selfish as she is, Katherine is still my sister and I wouldn’t want her to die. Carrying a burden of knowing I could’ve helped but didn’t on my conscience would be too much.

If that’s the case, all he needs to do is ask.

Before I can question Logan directly and remind him of every awful thing he has ever told me as a proof of why I don’t want to return, Ethan speaks up. “Alpha Logan, let me remind you that you’re standing in my territory, threatening war. Deadfang might not be as strong as Ravencrest is, but you don’t have an upper hand here. I suggest you think twice before you say another word.”

Logan opens his mouth, but Ethan raises his hand to stop him and keeps talking, “we’re both under obligation to follow the Council’s law and right now, I have the right to detain and imprison you solely for the threat you possess to my pack. Again, think carefully if it’s worth it.”

From the corner of my eye, I see Ethan suppress a smile. He’s more than happy to put Logan in his place and I’d be lying if I claimed I’m not enjoying the situation even a little bit.
