CHAPTER 24

Amelia

After the disastrous dinner the day before, I wasn’t in the mood to do anything the next day, but life stops for no one and I carry on like nothing happened.

As soon as I arrive at the hospital, Professor Michael instantly notices my fatigue. “Amelia, dear, you look tired. Sit down with me for a moment, it looks like you haven’t slept for days.” He says and pats the chair next to him in the waiting area.

I flash him a quick smile and sit down. He’s right, I couldn’t sleep for two nights in a row because of the stress, so I’m not surprised it shows.

“How are you feeling?” Michael asks, his voice taking that caring, fatherly tone he uses whenever he’s concerned about someone.

“I’m fine,” I answer too quickly, sounding defensive, so I’m not surprised about the look Michael gives me. It’s clear he’s not buying it.

Thankfully, Michael isn’t someone who has a tendency to press for answers when someone’s clearly unwilling to share them, so he doesn’t question me further.

Instead, he does something worse and speaks of the one person I want to forget exists for good. “Alpha Logan was here early this morning. He spent quite some time asking around about you.”

I don’t comment on it and Michael takes my silence as an invitation to keep talking. “Don’t worry, I didn’t tell him anything and as soon as I caught wind of what he’s doing, I instructed the staff to refrain from making any comments.”

Once his words fully sink in, I turn to look at Michael, completely caught off guard: “I can assure you I have no feelings for that man and I want nothing more than for him to just leave me alone.”

He nods. “I understand and I’m not implying otherwise either. I just wanted to give you a heads-up so you know what you’re up against here. Amelia,” Michael lowers his voice and leans closer to whisper, “just stay cautious and focus on the baby’s safety, okay? The baby is your main priority, don’t let Logan get to you.

“I’ll protect the baby, don’t worry.” My wolf quickly interjects.

I truly appreciate her determination to protect the baby, just as much as I appreciate the Deadfang pack members who also stand by my side.

Instead of dwelling on the rather unpleasant topic, I sit with Michael for a little longer and discuss some of the patients that were taken in during the night.

Eventually, Michael has to return to his duties and I do the same. Focusing on patients is a welcome distraction from yet another mess Logan brings into my life.

The day slows after the morning duties and as I’m checking the inventory, Sophia finds me. She enters the room, beaming, and doesn’t say as much as a hello before she starts gushing.” Amelia, there’s a new patient here, asking specifically for you,” she says and fans herself, and he’s so handsome. I’m almost jealous you’re the one who gets to treat him.”

I snort out a laugh and drop the inventory check up to leave the room and focus on my new patient. As I step out in the hall and look up, I freeze. It’s Logan, of course it has to be Logan.
