Life in Deadfang feels different these days. For a while now, I’ve been watching Amelia from a safe distance, at least for most part.

It took me only a few days of watching and seeing how kind, soft spoken, caring and genuinely nice Amelia is for me to start feeling pity for her. And not only me, even my wolf, who usually doesn’t care about anything but his late night runs and hunts, suddenly has grown a soft spot for the single mother.

For once, we both have found one thing we agree on – we want to protect her, even if that complicates all of my long-term plans.

As if on cue, my wolf decides to make his presence known and growls at me. “Not us. I want to protect her. You just agreed that you want to protect her too, it was my idea from the get-go.’

I roll my eyes at the remark and answer in my thoughts, not wanting my conversation to be overheard by someone who has no business knowing my thoughts. “It doesn’t matter who decided it has to be done first. What matters is that we’re on the same page, we both care and fight for a common goal.”

“Whatever,” he grumbles gruffly. “Where is Amelia, anyway? Shouldn’t she be back by now? Something’s telling me checking the kitchen shouldn’t take as much time as she’s taking.”

I hum in agreement and look around the banquet hall. He’s right, she should be back by now.

Just as I’m about to go and check if she’s okay, Joey appears at my side and clears his throat.

“Report,” I say quietly, letting my eyes scan the faces around us, trying to notice if Logan brought backup like the coward he is.

“The guards just reported that he’s here.” Joey whispers, his facial expression complete calm, not raising a single bit of alarm.

“Alone?” I ask and smile at the staff member that passes by us.

Joey’s eyes follow her until she disappears around the corner, then he leans in and whispers, they say he brought his men, which doesn’t surprise me and I’m sure you’re not surprised either. However, other than that, he came alone. Logan didn’t bring Luna Katherine with him.

The corner of my mouth twitches in a suppressed smile. Everything’s going perfectly according to my plan.

When I first heard that Katherine had returned to the pack, I sent a few rogues to test Logan. They’re dealt with already, so there’s no way Logan could ever tie them to my orders.

Sadly, Amelia became a casualty during that test. As much as I dislike the fact, I can’t stand here and lie that I’m not a little happy about it.
