Her words hit Julian’s weak spot. His face turned livid, but he finally lowered his hand.
Lauren refused to let the matter drop. In a flash, she snatched Michael’s phone before he could close his chat with the mistress.
Her eyes scanned the messages and instantly blazed with fury.
“ ’My baby’? Michael, you actually have the guts to cheat on me! I’ll kill you!”
“Have you lost your mind? This is just courteous banter. What man doesn’t put on a little performance now and then?” Michael shot back, his tone sharp.
“My life is so miserable!” Lauren collapsed onto the sofa, tears streaming down her face. “Julian, look at your father… After all these years together, he’s sneaking around with some young model…”
Julian hurried over to comfort his mother, completely forgetting about Chloe.
She stood aside, watching the scene unfold with a cold detachment.
Michael’s affair had been well concealed—Chloe herself had only learned of it through a senior entertainment reporter. She had never intended to expose it, but they had brought this storm upon themselves.
Watching Lauren’s shock and outrage, Chloe couldn’t help but feel a twisted sense of absurdity.
Pain only truly registered when it hit close to home.
Now that her own husband was the one cheating, Lauren finally understood how it felt.
Without looking back at the chaos, Chloe drove away from the Summers Manor—certain they wouldn’t have time to trouble her for a while.
She enjoyed the remainder of her weekend. On Monday morning, she headed into Velocity Magazine as usual.
The moment she stepped into the office, she sensed an odd tension in the air.
Her close colleague Mandy Wilson leaned in and whispered, “Mr. Clarke has been holed up in his office for half an hour.”
“Who’s getting chewed out?” Chloe murmured back.
Mandy’s expression turned even more peculiar. “You really don’t know?”
Chloe frowned, puzzled.
“Your husband is here—with that war correspondent, Jane,” Mandy finally revealed.
Understanding dawned on Chloe—now she knew why everyone had stared at her strangely.
Julian had brought his mistress to her workplace.
Mandy noticed her gloomy expression and slipped an arm around her shoulders. “Chloe, are you okay with your husband?”
“I’m fine,” Chloe smiled faintly at her.
Just then, the office door opened.
Jasper—his hair thinning drastically—stepped out. “Chloe, come in here for a minute.”
Chloe walked into the conference room in her high heels.
As Mandy had said, Julian and Jane were both there.
Julian wore a dark suit, the tie she’d given him for their fourth wedding anniversary around his neck.
Guilt must have been gnawing at him—he avoided her gaze when she entered, as if trying to hide from her.
However, Jane greeted her with a smile. “Good morning, Chloe.”
Chloe ignored her, turning to Jasper.
“What’s up? I have work to do later.”
Although Jasper hated to offend Chloe, Velocity Magazine’s top journalist, Julian’s earlier demands left him no choice.
Forcing a smile, he said, “Jane starts at the magazine today. You two are friends, so could you show her the ropes?”
Jane stepped forward, linking her arm through Chloe’s. “Mom and Dad were so happy when they heard I’d be working with you, Chloe. Now we can see each other every day.”
But Chloe pulled her arm away, her expression cold enough to freeze the air.
Jane pouted, softening her tone into a wounded whimper. “Chloe, I know there have been misunderstandings between us. I really want to clear things up—it would make Mom and Dad happy, too. Julian and I already explained everything. Why are you still holding a grudge?”
She painted herself as the reasonable, kind-hearted one, making Chloe look petty in comparison.
Finally, Julian stood up and spoke, glaring at Chloe with irritation, “Chloe, it’s just a job. Why are you targeting Jane like this?”
The words almost made Chloe laugh.
Just a job.

Rumors said he’d been ill—had he recovered?
Her decision to marry him brought him some luck so soon?
