Chapter 29
After Martha’s coughing subsided a bit, she held Kiara’s hand tightly.
“I’m just worried about you…” she said before pausing mid-sentence and letting out a heavy sigh.
Kiara looked a little sheepish. She was about to speak when Martha got up, saying, “I’ll go and prepare dinner now.”
“Just let the housekeeper do it, Mom. Why do you need to prepare the food by yourself?”
Chuckling, Martha said, “How can it be the same if the housekeeper cooked instead of me? Tyler and Stephanie like the baked ribs I make.”
“Hmph. They went out for a candlelit dinner tonight, so why even bother…” Kiara grumbled with a scowl.
“I just called Tyler, and he said they’ll be back soon. They probably didn’t get to eat much. In any case, I’m sure they have room for a few pieces of ribs,” Martha said before heading into the kitchen and getting to work.
By the time Stephanie and Tyler arrived, the entire house was filled with the scent of food.
“Mom,” Tyler called out.
Martha emerged from the kitchen with an apron wrapped around her. Smiling, she said to them, “You’re back. Go and wash up. I made your favorite baked ribs.”
“Mrs. Grover…” Stephanie greeted, her eyes turning a little misty when she saw Martha.
To her, Martha was her last source of warmth in the Grover family.
“Oh, you. Why are you still addressing me as Mrs. Grover?” Martha chided lovingly. “Isn’t it time for you to change that habit?”
Stephanie’s lips parted, but she couldn’t do it.
She thought that Martha probably believed she and Tyler had genuinely registered their marriage. However, she knew that was a lie. Therefore, she couldn’t bring herself to address Martha more casually, the way she would her real mother-in-law.
Thinking that Stephanie felt embarrassed, Tyler helped her out, saying, “Steph just isn’t used to it yet, Mom. Don’t rush her.”
“It’s fine. We’re a family from now on. You can slowly get used to it,” Martha said warmly. ” Dinner is almost ready. Wash up and take your seats at the dining table.”
Then, she headed back into the kitchen.
“Let me help you, Mrs. Grover,” Stephanie said as she joined Martha in the kitchen.

“Oh, you don’t have to. Everything’s pretty much ready. You work so hard at the office every day. You need to get more rest…” Martha urged. keep telling Tyler not to let you exhaust yourself too much.
“You haven’t had an easy time the last few years. He’s very careless sometimes. He doesn’t know how to be considerate toward another person.”
Stephanie silently turned on the faucet and washed her hands.
Apart from the baked ribs, Martha also prepared few other dishes, along with a soup that Stephanie liked.
Soon, dinner was served, and the four of them sat at the dining table. Stephanie and Tyler sat on one side, while Martha and Kiara sat across from them.
The sound of cutlery echoed in the dining room as Martha served a piece of rib to Stephanie.
“Eat up. You’re far too skinny,” Martha remarked, the smile in her crinkled eyes marked with
concern.
As Stephanie thanked Martha, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Kiara pouting in displeasure.
“Why aren’t you serving me, too, Mom?” Kiara whined.
“Oh, you. You don’t even like ribs! Here, have a cherry tomato.”
Kiara grumbled under her breath, “You gave her a piece of rib, but you only gave me a cherry tomato…”
