Shayne, Shayne, Shayne…
While unconscious, it seemed that there was a familiar and pleasant woman’s voice calling him.
It was Yanny.
The sound seemed far away, vague and faint.
“Yanny… Yanny… Yanny…”
The unconscious Shayne held tightly onto Yanny’s hand.
Yanny pursed her lips and furrowed her brows, looking at him. She tugged her hand quite a few times from his before successfully tugging it away.
Samuel was leaning by the patient’s ward door and asked, “What are you going to do with him? He turned out this way because he tried to save you, right?”
Yanny walked out of the ward and said calmly, “A life for another life. At the same time when he went to Fairy Creek and rescued me, I also risked my life taking the cable car to look for him. I don’t owe him anything.”
Samuel looked at Shayne on the bed. He said objectively without any emotions, “Yes, you don’t owe him anything but he still owes you. He’ll never know how much permanent damage you suffered thanks to him…”
Before Samuel could finish his sentence, Yanny smiled lightly and said, “He doesn’t need to know.”
Samuel sighed and said, “You still care for him. You think that he doesn’t need to know because you don’t want him to live in guilt for the rest of his life. Yanny, you’re being silly. He hurt you so badly. Why are you still caring for his feelings?”
Yanny leaned on the hospital wall, casually inserting her hands into her jacket pocket. She smiled bitterly at Samuel. “My life is already hopeless. There’s no need to drag him into this. Samuel, I’ve thought about it. I’ll head back to Empress Tree City and buy the movie rights to Peter’s books. Then, I’ll pass the company to someone else. I’ll quickly help Grandma to apply for a visa so that I can bring her together with me back to England.”
“You don’t hate him anymore?”
Yanny shook her head. “I can’t differentiate it anymore. I’m too tired. I don’t know what I’m feeling anymore. However, I know one thing’s for sure. If I continue being involved with him, I’ll fall into a deep, dark pit. Being in this pit and loathing him for too long, the nightmares will follow me like a shadow. For the past two years, I’ve always been loathing him. Now, I’m just exhausted. I don’t want to love, and neither do I want to hate. I just want to leave and properly start a new life.”
Yanny looked at Samuel and said determinedly. “Samuel, never have I felt so sure that I need to start a new life. I’m drowning here. There’s no end to it. It’s an endless cycle of love and hate.”
Samuel pointed to the patient ward. “In your new life, he’s not there?”
“Yes. He’s not there. If he was there, how could I call it a new life?”
Samuel said, “That’s good too. To stay away from the source of pain. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
A while later, the doctor made his rounds.
Yanny asked the doctor in front of the patient ward, “Doctor, how is he?”
The doctor said, “The CT scan report of his brain has been released. It’s probably due to the impact but his skull has slight bleeding and he’s suffering from a concussion. However, the rest of the patient's body indicators are normal. He’s in good health and only needs to recuperate for a period of time. The small blood clots in the head will be slowly absorbed back into the body and won’t leave any after-effects."
Yanny nodded. “Thank you, doctor.”
Yanny looked at her phone, the calls were all from Peter.
Yanny glanced at the ward and said, “If you’re in no rush to return to North City, could you help me stay here and look after him? I still have something troublesome that needs to be settled.”
“I cannot guarantee that when Shayne wakes up and doesn’t see you, he won’t go berserk. If he does, I won’t hold back,” Samuel said, half-joking, half-serious.
Yanny smiled and said, “Sure, go ahead. Thank you so much.”
“Be safe.”
Yanny nodded her head slightly. She clutched the phone in her hand and quickly left the hospital.
…
Shayne slept until the next afternoon before he woke up.
He was too exhausted. There were a few times he wanted to wake up but Yanny was calling out after him again and again in his dreams. He missed her dearly.
When Shayne woke up, he gazed around and noticed Samuel sitting by the bed reading the newspaper.
Shayne struggled to sit up. He furrowed his brows and looked at Samuel. His voice was extremely hoarse and he could not hide his detest for him, “Why is it you?”
Samuel put the newspaper down and said, “Do you think I want to watch over you? Yanny instructed me to stay with you until you woke up.”
Shayne’s expression relaxed a little. However, he had a minor hemorrhage in his brain so his face was haggardly pale. He looked much weaker than his usual self.
Shayne looked at Samuel and asked, “Where is she?”
“Who?”
“Yanny,” Shayne said curtly.
“She went to deal with Peter Brook. Since you’re up, my job here is done. I should leave.”
Yanny still does not wish to see him, not even a glimpse. She would rather instruct Samuel than to wait for him to wake up himself.
Samuel slowly got up in a gentleman-like manner.
