After Thompson threw the corpse into the helicopter, Ruby swiftly entered the chopper as well.
Serene was leaning into the main cabin as she stared intensely at Wilson with her watery eyes. She reached out and held onto his slightly cold, long slender hands as she pleaded, “Wilson Jarret, please answer me.”
Hidden behind her soft yet strong voice were hints of pleading. This made Wilson’s heart thump.
However, that man’s gaze looked extremely cold as he slowly pulled her little hands away while telling her in a calm voice, “Go home now. Stop waiting for me and just pretend we’ve never met.”
Stop waiting for him? Pretend they never met…
The cabin’s door was suddenly slammed shut, leaving Serene out on the other side.
As Serene stared at the helicopter above her head that was slowly getting further and further away from her, her tears rolled down the corners of her eyes.
He came and left.
…
Wilson, who was in the helicopter, lowered his gaze to look at the shrinking roof of the hospital and the little silhouette that had not left. His chest tightened. It felt like a huge hand grabbing his heart.
Ruby who was sitting next to him chuckled mockingly as she said, “Who was it that told me back then about not being able to live without Serene? How long did that last anyway before your breakup? A man’s mouth sure is exceptional at lying.”
While Thompson was piloting the helicopter, he chatted with them, “Wilson, you wouldn’t feel like you’d be dead soon, would you? Hence, why did you cut ties with that girl earlier? Are you still the same ruthless killer, White Wolf, that we know?”
White Wolf was Wilson’s codename from the Light Organization.
Wilson remained silent the entire time. He did not speak a word.
Ruby scoffed and said, “I’ve told you that you’ll never have a future with Serene since you both are from two very different worlds. People like her, an obedient girl who is born into a small family has the ideal career that saves lives but you on the other hand, are like a butcher whose hands were completely stained in blood. She saves lives and you take them. You both are fated to walk separate paths.”
Thompson disagreed as he said, “Ruby, you little envious devil. Although we kill, the people we murder are terrorists and bad people. The few lives we take keeps the world and the lives of a lot of people safe. Our career happens to be a glorious one, okay.”
“You make it sound so high and mighty. Are you touched by the words you speak?”
Thompson laughed and said, “We are heroes.”
Ruby mocked, “Right, nameless ones.”
Thompson was speechless.
Ruby glanced at Wilson and realized he had not spoken a word from the very start so she said, “Your stomach ailment… we really need to take care of that when we’re back or else, you’d really end up dead.”
“I know.”
Ruby gulped and could not help herself from asking, “Say, you didn’t just break up with Serene because you knew your days are numbered now, would you?”
Wilson calmly replied to her, “Didn’t you just mention that both she and I are people from vastly different worlds? Since that was the case, it’ll be much better if we parted sooner rather than later. It’ll do us both a huge favor anyway.”
Somehow, Ruby was infuriated as she said, “Wilson Jarret, so you’re a person that believes in fate.”
Wilson turned around to look out into the night sky as he calmly said, “I hope she’s able to marry a man who is exactly like me. That way, she’ll always remember me. However, I am also afraid of her marrying someone who is exactly like me.”
Hints of loneliness flashed across his calm face.
Ruby was a little puzzled so she asked, “Why?”
Wilson replied, “If that person is exactly like me, then why can’t that person be me instead?”
Ruby was stunned.
