Everybody praised Wilson’s cooking after they tasted the fish with pickled vegetables.
“Boss, your fish with pickled vegetables is so delicious!”
“I’m suddenly reminded of my mum’s sweet and sour fish. I missed those days when I could enjoy home-cooked meals.”
“I’m homesick as well.”
Tears started welling up in the mercenaries’ eyes as they held their plates.
Thompson nudged Wilson with his shoulder while he gorged himself on his fish with pickled vegetables. “Look at that. You made them cry. We’re here to fight, not to weep.”
Scoffing, Ruby teased Wilson, “I never thought a killer like you could cook such a delicious meal.”
She looked at him with her eyebrows raised questioningly. “How come I never knew you could cook so well?”
Wilson replied dully. “Because I don’t want to cook for you, so I decided to conceal my skills.”
Ruby’s lips twitched. “Wilson, is that even necessary? Has Serene tried your cooking before?”
Wilson answered straightforwardly, “Of course, I’ve cooked for her many times.”
Thompson clicked his tongue and said, “So the ruthless White Wolf is a down-to-earth family man at home.”
Ruby said, “It seems like you can cook well because your girlfriend has you in the palm of her hand. Wilson, how can you be such a loser? A grown man like you has to cook for a girl every day?”
Wilson did not care at all. “I don’t mind cooking for her.”
Ruby glared at Wilson. “Have you ever heard people saying that you’ll die early if you keep flaunting your love?”
“Someday, you’ll meet someone who’s worth flaunting. I hope you’ll meet him soon.”
Wilson got up and entered the tent after saying that.
Ruby and Thompson looked at his back and sighed. “Ruby, did you realize that men who are in love always say such cringy stuff?”
“What do you mean cringy? That’s called sweet talking. Girls should never trust a man’s words.”
Ruby got up and entered the tent as well.
Thompson was yelling behind her, “Hey, you can’t tar everyone with the same brush. Good men still exist! For example, the world’s most handsome guy, me!”
…
Ruby entered the tent and saw Wilson studying the map.
“We’ll be departing to the Arctic Realm tomorrow. Do you think we can find the treasure’s location? I heard the area is prone to avalanches. Many treasure hunters never make it out alive.”
Wilson was immersed in studying the map. Ruby bit her lips and could no longer resist herself. She asked, “Aret, don’t you think that what the Light Organization has been doing for the past two years is deviating from our original purpose of establishing this organization? We used to kill to maintain peaceful coexistence amongst good and bad forces. However, we’ve been fighting to seize resources instead for the past two years. How are we different from the Underworld Organization that we despised so much then?”
Wilson put away the map and lifted his head to look at her. “I believe in every decision that godfather makes.”
“But I don’t understand godfather’s approach. The only difference between us and the Underworld Organization is that we’re still practicing good etiquettes.”
“Ruby, Master raised us since we were kids. After so many years, I’m sure both you and I know very well what kind of a person he is. You shouldn’t question him.”
Ruby took a deep breath and said, “It’s true I shouldn’t question him but sometimes, I wonder if what we’re doing right now is truly defending justice. For example, we’re bringing those mercenaries to the Arctic Realm tomorrow. However, it’s possible we won’t be able to locate the treasure and they might lose their lives on the snow mountain.”
She lowered her eyes slightly and laughed mockingly. “I’ve been in an illusion for the last two years. I feel like what we’re doing is not to defend justice or peace. Instead, we’re doing it for personal gains. I thought we would be doing something more meaningful after acquiring power and resources. However, we’re actually fighting for more resources despite what we possess right now. What’s the meaning behind all this?”
Darkness flashed across Wilson’s eyes. He lowered his gaze and said, “What if one day, we’re on opposite sides with the Master and he wants to kill us. Would you surrender your life to him?”
Ruby was stunned. “Why are you asking me this question?”
Wilson simply shook his head, a faint smile on his face. “It’s just a ‘what if’.”
When Ruby was about to exit the tent, Wilson suddenly said, “I’ll protect you guys no matter how heavy the burden on our shoulders is.”
Ruby looked back and smiled. “Of course I know that. I believe in you.”
…
Wilson could not sleep well that night. He felt heavy and exhausted.
He dreamt of his childhood days when Stephen, his godfather, first brought him into the Light Organization.
