Serene stared at her mother, feeling puzzled. “Didn’t you already agree on me and Wilson being together? We’ve slept together before so how does tonight make any difference? Besides, there are no outsiders here. Who would know that we’re sleeping together and gossip about us?”
Serene’s mother sighed. “Why don’t you get my point? Do I look like someone who’s afraid of people gossiping about us? You… You’re even pregnant with his baby. Do you think I’ll mind if you sleep together with Little Jarret?”
Serene pouted. “You’re the kind of person who’s afraid of becoming the talk of the town.”
Serene’s mother lowered her voice and muttered, “I’m afraid that you two will be yearning for each other when you sleep together. You’re only a few months pregnant and young adults have low self-control. What if you two can’t bear the thirst and… and hurt the baby in your womb? It’s so humiliating if you go to the hospital because of that!”
“... Mom! When did your mind become so filthy?”
Serene’s mother pursed her lips. “...”
As an elder to Serene, the way she reacted was a little inappropriate toward the younger generation.
Serene laughed at her mother’s ludicrous thought and said, “I’ll tell Wilson about our sleeping arrangement then.”
“Go and quickly do it.”
Serene pranced around to look for Wilson and notified him, “I’m sleeping with my mom tonight. You shall sleep with my dad in their king-sized bed.”
Wilson creased his brows slightly. However, he did not have any opinion about it. After all, they were at her parents’ house. it would seem a little over the top if he were to have her all by himself.
The man lifted his arms and tousled her hair. “Alright.”
…
At night, Serene and her mother were lying on the same bed while chit-chatting with each other.
Her mother gently caressed Serene’s flat belly and grumbled, “I was too busy lecturing you and until now, I don’t even know how many months pregnant you are.”
Serene lied sideways, facing her mother. “It’s almost three months. Mom, after Wilson and I hold our wedding, let’s move into a bigger house. You and dad can stay together with us.”
Serene’s mom nudged her nose. “You’re getting married soon and regarding this, are you planning to ask Little Jarret before making a decision? What if Little Jarret does not agree to it? Besides, it’s not an easy task to get a big house in North City. The houses in North City are so expensive. You shouldn’t try to give Little Jarret any troubles.”
“Wilson told me that he will support whatever decision I made. Besides, it’s not a bad thing to bring both of you over to stay together with us. You can help us with some chores like preparing breakfast. How good will that be?”
Serene hugged her mother’s arms tightly like a little kid clinging onto her mother.
Her mother caressed Serene’s head. “You’re not young anymore and you’re going to be a mother soon. Why do you still act like a spoiled child in front of me? You two will be a newlywed couple soon. If your dad and I were to move to North City and live together with you two, it will pose a lot of inconvenience. Serene, you’re an adult and no longer a little child. You should take into account your partner’s feelings too.”
Serene’s mother deliberated for a moment and continued, “Besides, your dad and I are used to living in this town. Everywhere we go, we know people. If we move into the city and live together with both of you, we’ll be bored to death since we will be at home most of the time and we won’t know anyone in the neighborhood. At our age, our daily routine is different from you youngsters. Will you guys be happy if I were to wake you up early in the morning every day? As time passes, you two will only feel annoyed by our presence.”
“Alright, then. However, since you and dad are retired, you both can go to the city and visit us from time to time.”
Her mother locked her gaze at Serene’s face and answered, “Yes, of course. You’re going to be married soon. You must act like an adult and not scamper around like a little kid who hasn’t grown up yet.”
Serene suddenly donned a solemn face. “Mom, is this how you want it to be? Greeting everyone with a dull, solemn face like this every day?”
“I’m asking you to be more mature, not asking you to pull a long face.”
Serene looked up and wondered. “But Wilson once told me that I can forever be a little kid in front of him.”
Her mother held Serene’s hand lightly. “Serene, I wanted to apologize to you. Perhaps stopping you and Little Jarret from getting together was a wrong decision. Although the time I spent getting along with Little Jarret was brief, after observing him today, I realized that he genuinely cares about you. I’m fortunate that you didn’t miss this man in your life. You should cherish him more in the future.”
“Mom, I thought that you will never accept him as your son-in-law for the rest of your life because he is a divorcee. I thought that one’s reputation is far more important than anything in your eyes.”
