Just as Ruby was about to explain, an urgent knock could be heard coming from outside the door.
Since Blaine was still pretty annoyed, he felt very impatient from that knock.
"What is it!"
A soldier's voice could be heard coming from the outside, "Director, Dr. Nines have something he needs to discuss with you."
Blaine stared intensely at the woman underneath him as he frowned hard.
'Damn you Nines, you better make sure it's something really important!'
Blaine turned around and got up from the bed. He then grabbed a random jacket and casually put it on before striding out the door with a cold expression.
Ruby clenched her fists and wondered if she was actually cursed because her first reaction to Blaine violating her was not kicking him off the bed. Instead, she was worried about Blaine misunderstanding her and actually wanted to explain herself to him.
Could she actually be possessed by Softie from a decade ago?
It seemed that after her memories were restored, she was unsure why the way she looked at Blaine changed so much.
Before she restored her memories, it was not like she had absolutely no feelings toward Blaine. However, the only thing was, the feelings she felt for Blaine was merely being interested in him and could never be considered as 'love'.
Now however, it seemed that Blaine's thoughts and feelings toward her were starting to bother her more now.
She did not want him to misunderstand her relationship with Wilson.
Nothing had ever happened between her and Wilson aside from being married on paper. She had never slept with Wilson nor had Wilson ever slept with her. If she was her past self, she could not be bothered to explain herself this much.
However, she recalled the promise Blaine made to Softie a decade ago. He had never once forgotten about her and regardless of what had happened before, she was still once his woman. It was now impossible for their relationship to be pure and innocent nor could they end it now, so she still had to share some amount of emotional burden Blaine carried with him toward Softie as well.
…
Blaine rushed to the scene while emanating a strong menacing aura from his body.
Nines had just finished burning a body.
"What happened?"
Nines raised his brows as he asked, "What's up with you? Why the bitter look?"
Blaine raised his hand to squeeze his brows before taking a deep breath and spoke in a deep voice after he had calmed down, "I'm fine. I'm asking you what happened."
Nines stared at the nearby pyre as he spoke with a frown, "That soldier was infected by some sort of disease but the exact disease the soldier was suffering from was undetermined. Since we're not sure whether or not this disease could be infectious or not, I decided the safest option was to burn the body."
Blaine was not surprised as he stared at the burning pyre since such a thing was nothing more than a common occurrence at the borders. He was unable to feel any form of remorse or grief for the dead since there were more important responsibilities he had to shoulder.
"Have you found out his identity yet?"
"Of course."
Blaine raised his head slightly as he said, "After the body is cremated, send his ashes back to his family. We'll compensate his family with a pension. Make sure the family is satisfied with it."
"Alright, I'll inform my underlings to do just that."
Blaine asked, "What kind of virus is that? Have you discovered the strain yet?"
Nines shook his head and replied with a serious look, "Not yet but due to how hot the weather is at the borders, a pandemic is prone to breakout. However, it's better to be extra careful so I will inform the medical department to have hand sanitizers distributed and we will thoroughly sanitize the meeting rooms and clinic with U.V. light."
"Do what you must."
Just as Blaine and Nines were about to leave, a female doctor frantically rushed over to them.
"It's not good, Doctor Nines!"
"What happened? Speak calmly now."
The female doctor spoke while she tried to catch her breath, "A farmer's child that was sent over earlier was foaming and had a continuous high fever. His heart and liver function are deteriorating and since the local doctors offered no help at all in treating the child, the farmer came to our doctors here…"
Blaine and Nines looked at each other before walking over to the infirmary.
The child was already lying in bed by the time they arrived at the infirmary. He was on life support.
Nines entered after putting on a pair of gloves. He grabbed a flashlight, raised the child's eyelids and observed the child's dilated pupils.
"Foaming from the mouth with a high fever of 40 degrees. The lungs look clearly enlarged and most of his lymph nodes are swollen."
