It was in M Country at Fame City.
They were in the Drake Family's mansion.
"How is she?"
"Master, don't worry. Although the dosage of drugs in her body is very strong, injecting salt water will help dilute it. She'll regain consciousness very soon."
Drake nodded his head upon hearing what the doctor said. He sat next to the bed and frowned as he stared at the unconscious woman. His eyes were filled with concern.
The maid, Aunt Bowie, knocked on the door and came in quietly after the doctor left.
"Sir, the porridge is ready."
Drake's gaze fell on Ruby's face and said in a soft voice, "Keep it warm."
"Alright."
She looked defenseless and weak when she was asleep. He had a desire to protect her.
Drake lifted his hand to brush the hair falling on her forehead to behind her ears.
He was brought back to the memories 18 years ago. Back then, she was still a kid. Due to her stubborn and non-talkative personality, she was always bullied by the disobedient kids in the welfare institute.
She was very hard-headed. Even if the kids took her meal away, she would never give in and apologize. She was always at daggers drawn with the kids so she often starved herself.
He was three years older than her. Back then, they were the same type of people. They loved to stay away from the crowd and were used to being alienated.
He would steal steamed buns from the kitchen in the welfare institute and kept them warm in his embrace. His chest burned but he endured the pain just to make sure her steamed buns were warm enough.
She had not eaten for days, so she gobbled up the steamed buns. She would choke on her food and her face would turn red yet she kept stuffing the buns in her mouth because she was too hungry.
Yaakov thought that they would protect and keep each other warm forever.
However, the Drake family found him and brought him away. He begged his grandfather to bring Rubes along but the stern leader of the Drake family did not even blink. He simply ordered his man to carry Yaakov into the car and left the welfare institute.
That day, he sat on the warm seat of the luxurious car and turned around to look back at her. The little girl kept chasing after the car and gradually, she disappeared from his sight.
In the second year after he started living with the Drake family, he studied hard to prepare to become the successor of the Drake Family. He also wanted his grandfather to bring Rubes into the Drake Family.
By the time his grandfather agreed to adopt Rubes and they went back to the welfare institute, she was already adopted by another family.
Moreover, they did not know her whereabouts. The family that adopted her was very mysterious. The nun and director of the welfare institute was not allowed to reveal the identity of the family who adopted Rubes.
Yaakov never expected she would be adopted by the people from the Light Organization just because he arrived a little late.
She must have suffered a lot living on the edge everyday after joining the Light Organization.
Yaakov subconsciously held her hands and kissed them. Looking at her who was still unconscious, he said, “Rubes, I will always be by your side from now on. Neither will I let you suffer even the slightest bit.”
He was talking to Ruby yet it felt like he was talking to himself as well.
Ruby felt somewhat dizzy. She opened her eyes gradually and saw a man holding her hands while staring at her affectionately.
She regained her energy after the effect of the drug wore off. She sat up out of self-defense and pulled her hand away from Yaakov.
“Who are you? Where is this place?”
Yaakov looked at the woman’s sharp and defensive gaze. He was about to go closer to Ruby but she stopped him.
“Don’t come near me!”
Yaakov’s face slightly darkened. He sat next to the bed and stared at her. “You really don’t remember me?”
Ruby looked at the man in front of her. He looked handsome and somewhat familiar…
She eyed him for quite some time yet she still felt defensive. However, her brows started to relax and she said, “You are…”
A wave of anticipation washed across Yaakov’s face.
Did she finally remember him?
“You… you’re the person who gave me the tie at the mall the other day.”
