Jennifer relayed her encounter with Jean in detail. "Ms. Sawyer said we shouldn't bother her unless it's absolutely necessary. She's sick and needs plenty of rest. She also enjoys her peace and quiet and doesn't want any visitors.
"She said that if she needs anything from us, she'll let me know over the phone. From what I gathered, it sounds like she still has more money to give us."
Jennifer was green with envy as she thought about the designer labels and expensive jewels Jean wore. When would she get to live like one of those wealthy women?
It was all Nadine's fault. She could have brought her mother along to enjoy the good life. But no, she had to act all self-righteous, saying it would be inappropriate to have her mother live with her in her husband's home, giving every excuse under the sun to turn her down.
Jennifer felt as if she had wasted all those years raising Nadine. If she had known how heartless Nadine would become, she should have just strangled her at birth.
David's eyes sparkled with greed when he learned about such a fantastic opportunity. He grasped Jennifer's hand and asked gently, "Do you think that Ms. Sawyer is the woman Brad Hamilton likes? I heard he's been smitten with her for years, and they grew up together."
David had only made it through elementary school and could only recognize a handful of words. After dropping out of middle school, he spent his days at home dreaming of striking it rich without ever having to work. Because he was lazy and unambitious, none of the women in his vicinity wanted to marry him.
He met Jennifer during a speed dating event, and she was the only woman who didn't turn her nose up at him. He had to empty his savings to get Jennifer to move in with him.
In his 40-something years of life, he'd never seen such a large sum of money. When he learned that it was Jean's money, it felt as though a door had been opened to a whole new world of opportunities.
Jennifer pondered for a moment before responding, "It's her—it's definitely her! What, are you thinking of making her the lady of the Hamilton family?"
