Chapter 132
When Maelis heard Jerome had arrived, she frowned in obvious disgust, as if she’d just swallowed a fly:
Sophia gave her a cool, indifferent glance.
Dorian gasped, “Wait, you actually invited Jerome?”
“Hell no,” Maelis frowned and stomped her foot in irritation. “Why the hell would I invite him? This is so annoying.” If she hadn’t invited Jerome, then he was basically gatecrashing.
Maelis was about to storm over, but Dorian grabbed her arm. “With all these people watching, do you really want to make a stene and become the butt of everyone’s jokes?” he said. Dorian loved a bit of drama, but he still had his principles.
Maelis was so furious she wanted to grab her collapsible baton and start swinging.
Before long, Frank, Megan and Andy stepped in to escort Jerome away.
All eyes were on Jerome, and it nearly drove Maelis insane. ‘Am I not attractive enough? Even if I’m not, what about Sophia? Aren’t we both way better looking than that fucking loser Jerome?‘ Furious, she cursed Jerome inwardly.
To make matters worse, whispers were already spreading through the crowd.
“Wait, didn’t they say Maelis had given up on Jerome? Then why is he here now? What’s going on?”
“Come on, after chasing him for so many years, there’s no way Maelis would just give up like that. She’s just throwing a tantrum. Now that Jerome’s here, they’ll patch things up soon enough. Maybe we’ll be drinking at their wedding before long.”
“The Snows rushed to throw Maelis a bachelorette party, only to be publicly humiliated before it even began.”
Maelis’s face darkened with rage. She stormed over and snapped, “What the hell are you talking about?”
Seeing her approach, those people showed no guilt. Instead, their taunts became even more gleeful and malicious.
One of the girls sneered, “Come on, Maelis, Jerome’s right here–who do you think you’re fooling with this act?”
Maelis glared at the people she never got along with and snapped, “Cut the crap! Since when do you get to butt into my business? You come to my party just to mock me–are you trying to disrespect my family or what?”
At her words, the would–be hecklers immediately fell silent, choking back their retorts in bitter frustration.
They often bickered, but it was usually just harmless squabbles among the younger generation. However, when Maelis escalated it to a family matter, that changed everything–the atmosphere grew tense and awkward.
One of the female elders came over with a warm smile and said, “Now, Maelis, they just speak their minds without thinking. Don’t take it to heart. I’m still looking forward to your wedding toast.”
At the mention of that, Maelis instantly snapped. “You want to celebrate at my wedding? Well, I’d rather be at your funeral.”
The female elder’s face darkened. “Maelis, I am your elder after all. How dare you speak to me like that?”
Maelis glanced at her, taking in the crowd of party guests. Sure, snapping back had felt great at the moment, but she knew it would probably leave her with a bad reputation.
Dorian cut in, “Oh, honored elder, may I ask which branch of the Snow family you belong to?”
Sophia and Dorian moved to flank Maelis, It was Dorian who’d just fired off that pointed question.
The older woman eyed Dorian suspiciously, clearly not recognizing him. “Whose child are you?”, the demanded! Whe
you interrupt when your elders are speaking?”
Dorian widened his bright, cat–like eyes and said defiantly, “You don’t even know who I am, yet you claim to be my elder? Just because vaste think you can boss me around? That’s playing the age card. Does being old make you right?”
“You” the older woman sputtered, too angry to finish her sentence.
Dorian lifted his chin, a mischievous grin showing off his little fangs he looked adorable, but his words were anything but. “What? Don’t think (11 be scared just because you’re older. I’ve got a heart condition, so if you piss me off, you’ll be doomed.”
Just then, a woman in a pink gown–one of those who had just been gleefully mocking Maelis–flashed Dorian a sweet, slightly smug smile and asked, “Dorian, what brings you here? And where’s Evander?”
Dorian rolled his eyes and shot back, “Why? You’re asking about Evander? Since when are we that close?”
Rose was stunned by the retort and stammered awkwardly, “That’s not what I meant, I just-”
Dorian cut her off sharply, “You just have the hots for Evander and want to be my sister–in–law, don’t you?”
As everyone stared at her, Rose’s face flushed with humiliation and anger. She snapped, “What nonsense are you spouting? That’s not true at all.”
Dorian dramatically patted his chest. “Phew! You really scared me. I thought you actually wanted to be my sister–in–law. What a relief that’s not the case
Rose, who secretly harbored feelings for Evander, was fuming and mortified, but she didn’t dare make a scene in front of everyone.
Maelis burst into loud laughter. “So you’ve got the hots for that stone–faced Evander? Good luck with that.”
Rose felt trapped, with no easy way out. She decided to just let it all out. “So what if I did? It’s just life. People grow up, they get married. At least I’m no you, chasing after Jerome for years and then trying to force him into marriage. Who are you to talk?”
Maelis snapped, “The hell I’m forcing a marriage. You’re out of your mind–go get that checked.”
Dorian’s eyes widened dramatically–he couldn’t believe the gossip was about Evander. He immediately pulled out his phone and texted Evander, [Evander, I totally called it! Rose has the hots for you and wants to marry you! She admitted it herself!]
Evander replied, [Don’t get too worked up. Mind your health.]
Dorian sent a grinning emoji, put away his phone, and eagerly turned to Sophia, who was watching the drama unfold. With a mischievous smile, he asked, “Sophia, weren’t you about to say something just now?”
Dorian’s voice was low, but it carried clearly through the crowd. Sophia had been deliberately keeping a low profile, so no one had paid her much attention. But now, with Dorian calling her out, every eye instantly turned her way.
Sophia lifted her gaze, her cool eyes sweeping over the crowd before finally settling on Rose.
Sophia’s gaze made Rose squirm–especially that annoyingly perfect face, paired with Dorian’s affectionate behavior. To Rose, who had designs on Evander, Sophia was nothing but a rival.
